Feeling unwell, he thought: I have failed merely because of my own Dharma robes, what is the use of wearing an iron helmet? I should renounce the vows! He thought again: I should go before the Blessed One, if there is good fortune, I will practice Brahmacharya in the presence of the Blessed One; but if there is no good fortune, then I will renounce the vows! Thinking thus, he went to where the Blessed One was. At that time, the Blessed One was sitting in front of an assembly of hundreds of bhikkhus, teaching the Dharma. The Blessed One saw the venerable Mipham from afar. Having seen him, the Blessed One said to the bhikkhus: Bhikkhus, do you see that bhikkhu coming from afar? Venerable one, we see him. Bhikkhus, this foolish Mipham has committed a grave offense because of his old Dharma robes. Bhikkhus, like this, stealing mind has these and other faults. Therefore, a bhikkhu should not take his own bowl and Dharma robes with a stealing mind. If a bhikkhu takes his own bowl and Dharma robes with a stealing mind, he will commit a grave offense. Verse: When the kasaya falls, Begging for grain and oil for squeezing oil, The son and grandson of the householder, And the son of the heavenly citizen Pilida. The Buddha Bhagavan was dwelling in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. In Shravasti, there were two bhikshunis, one born in the east and one born in the south. The two of them went to the feet of the Blessed One, prostrated, and then withdrew. The bhikshuni born in the east was walking in front, and the kasaya she wore on her shoulder fell down. The bhikshuni born in the south followed behind and said: Holy mother, avasatha, avasatha! The bhikshuni born in the east, because she had obtained the power of the Dharma, did not notice that the kasaya had fallen. The bhikshuni born in the south picked up the kasaya and thought: If I return the kasaya to her, the holy mother's virtuous deeds will be completely lost, it is better to go to the summer retreat and give it to her there! Thinking thus, the two of them arrived at the summer retreat, and the bhikshuni born in the east hurriedly placed her feet outside the monastery.

After washing, she entered the monastery and sat in a half-lotus position. The nun born in the south thought, "If I offer it, it will only increase the offense. It's better to delay the offering for a while, perhaps I can get it." So she took the sanghati back to her dwelling and hung it on the clothes rack. A few days later, one morning, the nun born in the east said, "Young nun, bring the sanghati. We are going for alms." The young nun entered the dwelling, looked at the clothes rack, and not seeing the sanghati, said, "Holy Mother, the sanghati is not here." The nun born in the east said, "Look in the dwelling of the nun born in the south." The young nun entered the dwelling of the nun born in the south and saw the sanghati hanging on the clothes rack. Seeing it, she thought, "Who brought the Holy Mother's sanghati here?" The nun born in the south heard this and said, "She brought it." The nun born in the south explained what had happened. The nuns, with anger, scolded her, saying, "Because of your thieving mind, you hid the sanghati in your dwelling. You have committed a defeat that leads to failure." The nun born in the south felt remorse, thinking, "Have I really committed a defeat that leads to failure?" So she told the nuns about it, and the nuns told the monks, and the monks reported to the Blessed One. The Buddha, the Blessed One, said to the nun, "Nun, what is the meaning of 'Avasta'?" The nun replied, "Blessed One, we who grew up in the central region call a defeat 'Avasta'." The Blessed One said, "Monks, for this nun, there is no defeat in terms of the definition of language, the definition of region, or the definition of country. However, all the offenses arise from holding another's lost property for a long time. Therefore, neither monks nor nuns should hold another's lost property for a long time. If they do, they will commit a serious offense." The Blessed One to the monks or the monks

The Lord said that one should not keep another's lost property for a long time. A certain monk saw another's lost property, recognized that it belonged to a certain monk, and went to that monk's dwelling, gently knocking on the door. That monk arose from samadhi and said: Who is it? He said: Venerable, I have seen your lost property, please take it. He said: Venerable, I would rather be stolen by those who take without giving me the thing. I was not awakened by you from such a good state of samadhi. That monk felt remorse, thinking: Have I incurred a downfall by awakening the monk from samadhi? Then he told the monks about it. The monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Monks, that monk has no downfall. However, a monk should not be awakened from samadhi for this reason, but should hang the item in a conspicuous place. A certain monk saw another's lost property, recognized that it belonged to a certain monk, and took it to that monk, saying: Venerable, I have seen your lost property, please take it. That monk, being malicious, said: Venerable, you did not see it lost, but you stole it with a thieving mind. That monk felt remorse, thinking: Have I incurred a downfall? Then he told the monks about it. The monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Monks, that monk has no downfall. However, if a monk sees a monk's lost property, he should give it to the karmadana, and the karmadana should distribute it in the sangha for two or three days, and if someone recognizes it, it should be returned to him. If no one recognizes it, the sangha should do as it sees fit. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was at Jeta Grove in Shravasti.
