Ma. A clever student set fire to the forest in order to drive away birds, to waste food, and to cause suffering unreasonably. At that time, some birds were enveloped in smoke and panicked, falling into the walking places of the monks, or in the courtyards, or in the gatehouses. If a monk steals the birds that have fallen in this way, the value of the bird should be calculated, and if the items are complete, he will commit a Pārājika offense, and if the items are incomplete, he will commit a gross offense. This is because they have fallen so obviously.\ \ Vinayavibhaṅga, Volume Six. The so-called four-legged animals are: elephants, horses, mules, cattle, donkeys, goats, deer, buffaloes, and pigs. They are stolen in two ways: by separating them from the herd and by tethering them.\ \ How is it separated from the herd? If a monk steals an elephant by separating it from the herd, as long as it is still in sight, he will commit a gross offense. If it is out of sight, it is called stealing, and the value should be calculated, and if the items are complete, he will commit a Pārājika offense, and if the items are incomplete, he will commit a gross offense. This is how it is separated from the herd.\ \ How is it by tethering? If a monk tethers an elephant to various trees, walls, or other things, as long as it is still in sight, he will commit a gross offense. If it is out of sight, it is called stealing, and the value should be calculated, and if the items are complete, he will commit a Pārājika offense, and if the items are incomplete, he will commit a gross offense. This is how it is by tethering. Just as it is with elephants, so it is with horses and other remaining four-legged animals.\ \ The so-called many-legged animals are: ants, butterflies, sesame seeds, chaff, carrion eaters, scorpions, Taryamabuka, and Treilata. They are stolen by three types of people: harmful people, those belonging to the chief of the city guards, and ocean merchants.\ \ How do harmful people steal? For example, harmful people fill pots with many-legged creatures and then place them. When they cut them with a knife, they take away

Then, their feet or hands are placed inside those vases, and when they are seized by them, they quickly measure out a lot of cloth and ointment, thus harming them. How do those belonging to the great division guarding the city do it? Like this, those belonging to the great division guarding the city fill unbroken vases with many-legged creatures and place them there. When the enemy's army comes, they engage in battle together with them. If they are able to subdue them, then that is good. If they are not able, they throw the unbroken vases filled with many-legged creatures placed on the fence, and when they are seized by the many-legged creatures, they scatter. Thus do those belonging to the great division guarding the city. How do the ocean merchants do it? Like this, the ocean merchants fill unbroken vases with many-legged creatures, load them onto ocean-going ships, and when those accumulating wealth cross the great ocean, thieves with blue or black marks come and destroy the ships. The merchants then engage in battle together with them. If they are able to subdue them, then that is good. If they are not able, they throw the unbroken vases filled with many-legged creatures, and when they are seized by the many-legged creatures, they scatter. Thus do the ocean merchants. If a monk steals many-legged creatures, the value of the many-legged creatures should be calculated, and if the items are complete, he commits a defeat. If the items are not complete, he commits a grave offense. Summary: A Candala and a prostitute, A mixed fabric, a temporary time, A good sign and given with wealth, Knowing it as one's own, taking the bowl. Not victorious and hidden by the moon, Self-reproach is theft. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was staying in Jeta Grove in Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. In Shravasti, there were two monks, a Candala and a prostitute, called "speech mixture," who spoke and conversed, associated and inquired, and lived together at the same time and place.
