Having arrived at a certain place, there lived a wealthy householder with abundant riches and possessions near the cliffs. He was also devout and invited those monks as guests, offering them food and giving each of them a set of clothes. The monks said, 'Householder, the Blessed One has forbidden carrying items that need to be measured with a scale on the road.' Therefore, how should we accept them? That householder remained silent. The monks spoke of the merits and then gradually returned from there to Shravasti. Those monks said to them, 'Venerable ones, welcome! Welcome! Did you travel well?' They said, 'We traveled well. However, a householder offered us food and gave each of us a set of clothes. To that, we (thought), 'Householder, the Blessed One has forbidden monks from carrying items that need to be measured with a scale on the road.' Therefore, how should we accept them?' So we did not accept. The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, 'It should be accepted, and after accepting, it should be allowed, and it can be used on the road.' When monks search for dyes, wood, copper, and pots, they become exhausted by the road, become lazy, and become inconsistent with the goal. Those monks were harassed by lions, tigers, and thieves. The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, 'One should reduce the quantity or reduce the quantity oneself and then walk.' The same fault occurred again. The Blessed One instructed, 'It can be dealt with by squeezing cow dung, or by washing.' Even so, the same fault occurred again. The Blessed One instructed, 'Even the ends or tops can be cut off.' What I have permitted for the impoverished should not be excessively used in ordinary circumstances. If it is excessively used, it will constitute a serious transgression.' The Buddha, the Blessed One, was residing in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Monastery in Shravasti. At that time, a monk went to Rajagrha.

Having vowed to reside for the summer, after three months of summer had passed, he went to Shravasti to pay homage to the Blessed One, as he had not obtained his monastic robes. The monks said to him: "Venerable one, do not be in a hurry until you have obtained the robes." He was not pleased and did not stay. Then a monk gave him a large piece of cloth. He thought: "If this could be made into robes, I would not be unable to see those who practice the pure life. I should have a monastic friend make it into robes." Knowing this, he said to a monastic friend: "Please make this large piece of cloth into robes and sew them together, until I have seen those who practice the pure life." Because he was lazy, he did not make it into robes, but only sewed them together. When that monk took the sewn robes and went, gradually reaching the place of the customs office, the customs officer said: "Venerable one, do you have any goods to pay the customs tax?" He replied: "I do not." "Please let me inspect it." When he inspected it, he saw the large piece of cloth and said: "Venerable one, how can you, having gone forth into the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, lie for the sake of a large piece of cloth?" The monk said: "Good sir, I do not know. When I was going to see the venerable ones, I obtained this large piece of cloth, and I said to my friend: 'Please make this large piece of cloth into robes and sew them together, until I have seen those who practice the pure life.' Because he was lazy, he did not make it into robes, but only sewed them together." The customs officer said: "Venerable one, that is not your friend, but rather my friend. Therefore, please give me the customs tax and depart." The monk felt remorse and gradually went to Shravasti. The monks said: "Venerable one, you have come, well done! Did you have a pleasant journey?" He said: "Venerable ones, how could it be pleasant?" They said: "Venerable one, why do you say that?" He told the monks the details of the matter. The monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: "Monks, to that monk...
