The Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples is perfect in discipline, perfect in samadhi, perfect in wisdom, perfect in liberation, perfect in the knowledge and vision of liberation, is the object of universal offering, the object of supreme offering, the object of joining palms, the object of reverence, the supreme field of merit, is the world's field of merit, it should be said. If thus praising the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, if giving is good. If not giving, then one should proceed by measuring the dice. If one does not proceed in this way, it becomes a serious offense. The monks, for the sake of the Three Jewels, began to offer things that should be measured by dice, and in the place of the dice, they praised the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, but did not give. The monks made offerings from one share, and the Blessed One said, "From all three, one should also give in common." When the monks gave in common from all three, they were separated from meaning and completeness, and they were traveled by lions, tigers, and thieves. The Blessed One said, "One should abandon the share of possessions by doing one deed." The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Jeta Grove in Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. In Shravasti.

A monk possessing the three baskets, a speaker of the Dharma, endowed with the courage of knowledge and liberation, went on a journey and eventually reached Rajgir, where he spent the summer retreat. After three months, he set out for Shravasti to pay homage at the feet of the Blessed One. Seeking like-minded companions, it wasn't long before a merchant, having acquired goods from Rajgir, set out for Shravasti. He approached the monk and praised the three bases for meritorious actions, elaborating on them in such a way that a strong faith would arise in his mind at that time. As a result, faith arose in the merchant, and he offered food to the monk, covering him with a large, precious cloth. He then bowed at the monk's feet and said: "Venerable one, what should I do? Please instruct me." The monk replied: "Good sir, I wish to go to Shravasti to pay homage at the feet of the Teacher. Therefore, please kindly escort me." The householder said: "Venerable one, as you wish, I will take you there without fail." The monk traveled together with the merchant, and the merchant said: "Venerable one, you are seeking alms, while I am seeking merit. From Rajgir to Shravasti, please allow me to lighten your burden with robes, alms, lodging, provisions for illness, and medicinal supplies." The monk accepted, and before long, they arrived at a customs post. The merchant paid the tax on his goods, and then thought to himself: "My goods have been taxed, but the venerable one's large cloth has not. If it turns out that I alone must pay the tax, it would be better to put it in my own container." So, the merchant said to the monk: "Venerable one, please return the large cloth to me." The monk said: "Good sir, what are you saying? Have you become regretful?" The merchant replied: "Venerable one, I have no regrets. It's just that my goods have been taxed, but your large cloth has not. If the tax collectors seek tax on the large cloth, in effect, I alone will have to pay it."

Recite from the place of 'Ma' and give alms. The monk said, "O good-faced one, the Blessed One has established the precept that a monk should not recite from the place of 'Shogam' where the substance to be measured by Shogam is located. If I commit a transgression because of this, it would be inappropriate, so I will not give." The caravan leader thought, "These noble ones act inconsistently, so I will know the time for this." Then, the caravan leader said to the monk, "O noble one, I am busy, and you will not be able to accomplish any alms-seeking, so please go to the village to seek alms." The monk went to seek alms, and while he was seeking alms, the caravan leader put the large cloth into his own container. When the monk came to the place of 'Shogam', the measurer asked him, "O noble one, do you have a little substance to be measured by Shogam?" The monk said, "O good-faced one, I have a large cloth." The measurer said, "O noble one, please show it to me." The monk looked around, but the large cloth was not visible, so he looked back and forth and rubbed his hands together. The measurer said, "O noble one, why are you doing this?" The monk said, "O good-faced one, my large cloth has been stolen by those who take what is not given." The measurer said, "O noble one, it was not you who was stolen, but I who stole it. Therefore, I did not obtain 'Shogam'." When the monk left the place of 'Shogam', the caravan leader said, "O noble one, why are you depressed? O good-faced one, you have generated merit from giving, but you have not generated merit from enjoying. O noble one, why is that? My large cloth has been stolen by those who take what is not given." The caravan leader said, "O noble one, it was not stolen by those who take what is not given, but I put it in my own container because I was afraid of 'Shogam'. If you need it, what should I do? Give it?" The monk said, "O good-faced one, it is good that I was stolen by those who take what is not given, but it is not good that I have committed a transgression because of this." O noble one, this has nothing to do with your bodily action.
