It is done. If, with a mind of compassion, one thinks, "If these sentient beings were to lose their lives because of this, that would not be right!" If, because of this reason, that sentient being were also to generate much non-merit, that would not be right! Thinking thus, does one burn it? Does one cut it down? Does one destroy it? If so, one commits a misdeed. If a monk steals a wild animal caught in a hunter's trap, the value of the wild animal should be calculated, and if the items are complete, he commits a defeat (parajika), and if the items are incomplete, he commits a grave offense. If, with the thought of making it unhappy, thinking, "May it not belong to him, nor belong to me," one abandons it, one commits a grave offense. For example, a fisherman or a skilled disciple of a fisherman does this at the edge of a river or a large canal: in order to dredge up and ruin many fish, and to cause them suffering in an improper way, they set up a fish weir.

If one thinks that possessing such things will also generate many non-virtuous deeds, and therefore abandons them, it becomes a minor offense. The verse says: On land, the water for humans and, Likewise, the water for animals as well. In the ocean, the water for humans and, The water for animals is also the same. For example, when many merchants, carrying goods, are on the road to a monastery, and water is scarce and expensive there. They store water there in various containers, such as earthenware pots, wooden bowls, round barrels, and leather bags. Then they allocate the water, saying, 'This much for humans, and this much for animals,' and give it away. If a monk, with a thieving mind, takes possession of the water allocated to humans, then in that case, the value of the water allocated to humans should be calculated. If the items are complete, he commits a Parajika offense; if the items are incomplete, he commits a major offense. If he takes possession of the water allocated to animals, then in that case, the value of the water allocated to animals should be calculated. If the items are complete, he commits a major offense; if the items are incomplete, he commits a minor offense. For example, Many merchants of Jambudvipa, in order to accumulate wealth, board ships and enter the great ocean. Because the great ocean is only salty, they store water there in various containers, such as earthenware pots, wooden bowls, round barrels, and leather bags. Then they allocate the water, saying, 'This much for humans, and this much for animals,' and give it away. If a monk, with a thieving mind, takes possession of the water allocated to humans, then in that case, the value of the water allocated to humans should be calculated. If he takes possession of the water allocated to animals, then in that case, the value of the water allocated to animals should be calculated. If the items are complete, he commits a major offense; if the items are incomplete, he commits a minor offense. The verse says: Stealing step by step, Likewise, increasing step by step, From the dwelling to the corridor, and so on, Are all correctly categorized. For example, the Khenpo and, The teacher are walking on the road, they live together and are close
