Thinking, "This cat has become weak, there must be some reason for this." So he began to observe the cat. Soon, he saw that it had a furry butt, and thought, "This fellow is definitely not eating ghosts, but killing mice. I must expose him face to face." So he observed it from a hidden place, cautiously approaching. Soon, he saw the cat eating the last mouse, and stood far away, saying in verse: Uncle's power is growing, but my team is shrinking. A furry butt that eats fruits and roots should not appear. This asceticism is not true asceticism, this asceticism is only for one's own benefit. The mice have decreased, Fire-born, may you be auspicious! Monks, what do you think? The cat at that time, named Fire-born, was Devadatta. At that time, he also ate mice in a way that seemed like the true Dharma, just as he deceives the world now in a way that seems like the true Dharma. The monks became doubtful, and in order to dispel all doubts, they asked the Buddha, the World Honored One. Venerable One, what is in accordance with the World Honored One's view, so that one can happily and smoothly cross the wilderness? And those who are in accordance with Devadatta's views are not in accordance with the Dharma and will eventually suffer. The World Honored One said: Monks, it is not only now that this is so, but it was the same in the past. Those who are in accordance with my views can happily and smoothly escape from the wilderness. Those who are in accordance with Devadatta's views are not in accordance with the Dharma and will eventually suffer. Monks, in the past there were two merchants, who were trading together with five hundred carts, and entered a wilderness. After they entered the wilderness, the oxen sometimes lacked grass, sometimes lacked water, and sometimes lacked everything. So, the merchants, with their oxen, walked more and more tired and painfully in the wilderness, and suddenly discovered a place full of green grass and abundant water.

Seeing the crowd, the merchants released the cattle there, bathed themselves, and drank plenty of water. Then, those cattle, exhausted by the scarcity of water and grass, ate their fill of grass, drank their fill of water, and rested. Among them, the lead bull made it known to the others: 'Wise ones, we are exhausted by the lack of grass and water, but this direction is lush with vegetation and abundant with water. If you wish, let us stay and rest here.' Another lead bull said to his companions: 'Wise ones, humans are powerful and can tame the untamable, so we will be harmed. Let us carry our loads as usual.' After he said this, another lead bull angrily said to his companions: 'Wise ones, who has seen the back of the moon? These things depend on carrying loads. Yu Bu will not be sent.' When the merchants began to drive the cattle, the cattle retreated, and the merchants beat them severely, whipping them with thorny whips, causing them to bleed and connecting them to the carts. The other cattle did nothing, because they were not carrying loads, so the merchants did not punish them at all. The deity spoke in verse: 'These cattle are driven by cattle, driven to evil places, wounds appear, blood flows, enduring hunger and thirst. These cattle are driven by cattle, driven to good places, they cross the wilderness, drinking cool water to their heart's content.' Monks, what do you think? At that time, the lead bull who guided well was none other than myself. At that time, the lead bull who deceived others was none other than Devadatta. At that time, those who listened to my words crossed the wilderness in peace and well-being. Those who listened to Devadatta's words suffered because they were not in accordance with the Dharma. Even now, those who follow my views will cross the wilderness of samsara in peace and well-being. Those who follow Devadatta's views will suffer because they are not in accordance with the Dharma.

It became suffering. The monks became doubtful and asked the Blessed One, the Buddha, who cuts off all doubts. The Blessed One observed that the monk Devadatta was foolish and his retinue was also foolish. The Blessed One said: Monks, it is not only now that Devadatta is foolish and his retinue is foolish, listen to how it was in the past as well. Monks, in the past, a group of monkeys lived in a secluded place. As they wandered, they saw the reflection of the moon in a well. The leader of the group said: Wise ones, the moon has fallen into the well, should we let the world be without the moon, or should we take it out? They said: Let's take it out properly. They began to discuss how to take it out. Other monkeys said: Don't you know? We can take it out by linking the monkeys together. So they linked the monkeys together, the first monkey grabbed the branch of a tree, and the others grabbed its tail, one after another. In this way, all the monkeys grabbed on, and the branch was overloaded. The water was stirred up, and the reflection of the moon disappeared. The branch also broke, and all the monkeys fell into the well. Because the method was wrong, it became suffering. The deity said in verse: Here, those foolish men, Whose leader is also foolish, They will all be destroyed, Like the monkeys trying to fetch the moon. Monks, what do you think? The leader of the monkey group at that time was Devadatta. At that time, he was foolish, and his retinue was also foolish. Now he is also foolish, and his retinue is also foolish. The Blessed One Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Anathapindika's Garden. Then, the Blessed One thought: The Tathagata himself has done the deeds and obtained the results, changed the conditions, abided as it came, and does not do immature things. Having done and accumulated the deeds, who else will experience separately the deeds that I have done and accumulated? The deeds done and accumulated will not mature in the external realm, until they bear fruit for sentient beings.
