The outsider is just ourselves. He said, "No, get away." He also said in verse: "I dwell happily in this valley, enjoying the cool water to relieve fatigue. As long as there is no sound of a fox, the elephant can leave safely." After he left, he said to the foxes: "This four-legged king is just a fox, I saw him living in a place called 'So-and-so Valley'." They said: "If that's the case, we will verify whether he is a fox or not." According to the rule, if the foxes hear the sound of a fox and do not make a sound, their fur will fall off, so they began to make the sound of a fox, and he thought: "If I don't make a sound, my fur will definitely be eaten, if I get off the elephant and make a sound, he will kill me, I might as well make a sound here." So he rode on the elephant and began to make a sound. The elephant knew and thought: "Is the fox riding on me?" So he threw it down and trampled it to death with his feet. The god said in verse: "Those who regard the inner path as the outer path, and the outer path as the inner path, will be destroyed like an elephant trampling a fox to death." Monks, what do you think? The fox at that time was Devadatta himself. At that time, he also regarded the inner path as the outer path, and the outer path as the inner path, so he suffered because it was not in accordance with the Dharma. Now he also regards the inner path as the outer path, and the outer path as the inner path, so he was robbed of his retinue. When the Venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana robbed Devadatta of his retinue, Devadatta scolded Kalodayin and Khanda-dhava, saying: "You two made me lose my retinue." The monks became doubtful, so they asked the World Honored One who cuts off all doubts: "Venerable One, Devadatta's retinue was robbed by others, but he caused others to suffer, what is the reason for this?" The World Honored One taught: "Monks, it is not only like this now, but also in the past, his wife was also robbed by others."

Listen to the suffering caused to the vulnerable in an unjust manner. Monks, in the past, in another place, there lived a herd of elephants. There, an elephant was infatuated with a female elephant, and she was particularly fond of another young elephant. So she said to the young elephant, "Do you sense it? Shall we flee?" Then the young elephant said, "What way do we have to flee?" She said, "I know a way." She said to the elephant, "We shall enter the pond to bathe." When it entered, she said, "Look, we shall remain submerged in the water for a long time." When that foolish one remained submerged in the water with her, she stood up and fled with the young elephant. The elephant stayed for a long time, and when it stood up, it did not see them. So it thought, "I might fail, I shall submerge again." So it submerged again, planting its tusks in the ground and sitting. After a long time, it ran out of breath and stood up. When it did not see the female elephant, it began to stir up the pond back and forth. There, it caused unjust suffering to many creatures such as fish, turtles, frogs, and so on. The god spoke in verse: Alas, great mass of flesh! This has no wisdom. If a wife is stolen by another, One inflicts suffering on others. Monks, what do you think? At that time, at that time, the noble elephant was Devadatta. Even then, his wife was stolen by another, and he caused unjust suffering to others. Even now, his retinue is stolen by another, and he causes unjust suffering to others. The section of geese.
