Section of Geese Section of Geese Summary: Geese making loud calls, decaying deer, monkeys, elephants, cats, cows, moons, stones, great elephants, foxes, and Brahmins. Monks arose with doubts and asked the Blessed One Buddha, who cuts off all doubts. "Venerable Blessed One, five hundred monks have renounced, but the venerable Ananda has not renounced, please look upon it." The Blessed One said: "Monks, not only is it so now, but in the past Ananda did not renounce me either, listen to that. Monks, in the past, in the great lake of Madra, there was a goose king named Yulkhor Kyong. He had two sons, named Gangwa and Zhin Gye. Gangwa was the elder brother, and Zhin Gye was the younger brother. Of these two, Gangwa was fierce, arrogant, and cunning, always threatening the geese. Sometimes he would pluck their feathers, and sometimes he would scratch them with his claws, causing hundreds of other harms. The geese went to the goose king Yulkhor Kyong every day to complain, and Yulkhor Kyong thought: 'Gangwa is fierce, arrogant, and cunning, if I make him the crown prince, he will destroy the geese after I die. I must devise a plan.' So he summoned Gangwa and Zhin Gye and instructed them: 'Go and inspect the sources of rivers, lakes, and ponds. Whoever comes to me first, I will make him the king of the geese.' The two of them, competing with each other, set out with five hundred attendants each. They inspected each other's river sources, lakes, and ponds, and finally arrived at the city of Varanasi. At that time, the king of Varanasi was named Tsangjin, and the country was prosperous, flourishing, peaceful, without famine, with good harvests, and full of people. He was ruling the kingdom. Not far from the gardens of Varanasi, he had a pond called Tsangden built, which was far superior to other ponds and lakes, and he had people draw water from it.

Various kinds of flowers were born. Thousands of flower and fruit trees also grew on the banks and in all four directions. There, Utpala (青莲花), Padma (红莲花), Kumuda (白睡莲), and white lotuses adorned the place, and various dense trees beautified it. Seeing such a sight with many kinds of birds making sounds, a goose king, surrounded by five hundred geese, landed and began to play as he pleased. The beautiful-faced goose king was told by his companions: You too, come and play! The goose king said: Let me first obtain the kingdom, and then I will return and play later. Having said that, he went in a hurry and obtained the kingdom. After that, he, along with five hundred geese, came to Varanasi and landed in the Brahma Pond, and began to play leisurely. As he lived so leisurely, people saw him and were greatly amazed. They said: Alas, this goose king is so beautiful, where did he come from? With his beautiful form, he overwhelms all the birds swimming in the water, adorns the Brahma Pond, lives happily, and brings joy to the world. All the people living in Varanasi also heard about it and surrounded the Brahma Pond, gazing at his beautiful form and leisurely life. The ministers said to the king: A lord of swans has come here from somewhere and landed in the Brahma Pond, surrounded by hundreds of geese. With his beautiful form, he overwhelms all the birds swimming in the water, brings joy to the world, and lives leisurely. The king said: Wise ministers, if that is so, then call the bird catchers! After they were called, the king commanded: Wise ministers, I have heard that a lord of swans, with an exceedingly beautiful appearance, has come to the Brahma Pond. Capture him without harming him and present him to me! They caught him very gently without harming him, and then the goose king spoke in verse: I have been firmly seized, having fallen into the hands of men, I am helpless.

They took the leader of the geese to the king, and the other one that was not caught was also caught by the net of love, and came by itself. The leader of the geese was presented to the king, and the king said: Wise ones, why was the other one brought? They said: O god, we did not catch it, it came by itself. The king was very surprised and said: Without a doubt, this is its wife, release this leader of the geese and its mate together, and none of you should kill them. The birds said: O god, if others are to kill, please give the order. The king ordered the ministers: Wise ones, now in the city of Varanasi make an announcement, the god himself has given the order: Whoever lives in this area, do not kill any creatures that swim in the water. They made the announcement. Monks, what do you think? At that time, the leader of the geese, who was vast, was myself. At that time, his wife was Ananda. One goose missing five hundred, that is, five hundred monks missing one, these are they. At that time, when they became geese, they had completely let go, Ananda became the first, so he did not completely let go of me.
