What use is this thought, captured by wonder, to you? It said: It is a household. He said to it again in verse: I will not kill you, nor will I kill the deer king, and with the beloved household, you shall go together. It also said in verse: Just as the hunter and I and the beloved household are happy, so may the hunter and all relatives rejoice together. Then the hunter was even more amazed, and released the deer and went together. Monks, what do you think? Who was the deer king at that time? It was I. Who was the doe at that time? It was Ananda. Those who fled with one deer less than five hundred are these monks who are less than five hundred. Even then I was abandoned by these, but Ananda was not. Even now I am abandoned by these, but the monk Ananda has not abandoned me. The monks were in doubt and asked the Blessed One, the Buddha, who cuts off all doubts: Venerable one, look at Devadatta destroyed by foul gains and foul respect. The Blessed One said: Monks, not only is this the case now, but listen to how this foul one was destroyed by gains and respect in the past as well. Monks, in the past there was a great lotus pond on one side of a mountain. Near it lived an elephant. On the other side lived a fox. After some time, the elephant drank water from the lotus pond and went away, and the fox came and said to the elephant: Shall we fight or make way? The elephant thought: This foul, afflicted, coarse one, if I kill it with my feet or trunk or teeth, it will become unsuitable because of impurity, so in short, this foul one should only be killed by a foul one, thinking thus, he said in verse: You are not killed by feet, nor by teeth or trunk, the foul should be killed by the foul, you will be killed by the foul. The elephant thought: Make way.

Then he left, thinking: 'It won't eat me, it will follow me.' So he hurried on his way, faster and faster. The fox thought: 'I have deceived it with just a few words, that's why it's running faster and faster.' So he followed closely behind the elephant. When the elephant knew that the fox was approaching, he threw a lump of dung at it with all his might, and the fox was hit and died. Monks, what do you think? The fox at that time was Devadatta. Then, too, this corruption was defeated by corruption. Now, too, this corruption is defeated by the corruption of gain and respect. Furthermore, the monks arose with doubts, and in order to dispel all doubts, they asked the Blessed One. Venerable One, those who are in accordance with the Blessed One's view have become well able to overcome the great fear of samsara. Those who are in accordance with Devadatta's view are regarded as improper; look at those who have become wretched. The Blessed One said: Monks, it is not only now that this is so. In the past, too, those who listened to my words were freed from great fear, while those who listened to Devadatta's words became wretched because they were improper. Listen to this. Monks, in the past, near a mountain, where flowers, fruits, and water were abundant, lived two leaders of monkey troops. Each leader had five hundred followers. One of the leaders of the troops, while sleeping, had a dream in which he saw himself being put alive into a copper vessel, along with his five hundred followers. Having seen this, he was terrified and made a 'squeaking' sound. Before dawn, he gathered the monkeys and began to recount his dream. 'Wise ones, last night I had a bad dream. Let us move from this place.' The monkeys said: 'Let it be so, let us flee.' Bodhisattvas are people who are sensitive to dreams. That great being said to the other leader of the troop: 'I have had such a dream. If you wish, may we move elsewhere?' That leader did not believe it and said: 'Is everything dreamed in a dream true?'
