Will it change? If you are going, then go. I will become very vast, so I will not go. He believed those words and separated himself from the group. At some time, at the foot of that mountain, a maid was roasting barley on the stove, not paying attention, and a sheep wandered in that direction and began to eat. She hit it with a piece of wood, and the fire blazed up, spreading to the king's elephant stable, and the burning destroyed the elephant stable, and many elephants were burned. The king summoned the doctor and said: What treatment is there for the elephants that have been burned by the fire? That doctor's barley field had been ruined by monkeys, and he thought: Now is the time to take revenge on these monkeys. So he said: If the elephants are smeared with the fat of the divine monkey, they will be healed. The king ordered the ministers: Wise ones, prepare the monkey's fat! They also ordered the hunters. The hunters caught all the monkeys living near the foot of the mountain and offered them up. The doctor had harbored a grudge for a long time, so he put the monkeys alive into a copper pot and boiled them. The god spoke a verse: In villages and cities, one should not live in places where there is discord. Because of the discord between the sheep and the maid, the monkeys were all destroyed. Monks, what do you think? The leader of the monkey troop at that time, the one with keen dreams, was myself. The other leader of the troop at that time was Devadatta. At that time, those who listened to my words were completely liberated from great fear. Those who listened to Devadatta's words became bad because of impropriety. Now, those who are in accordance with my view are completely liberated from the great fear of samsara. Those who are in accordance with Devadatta's view have become bad because of impropriety. Furthermore, those who are in accordance with my view will attain happiness and well-being. Those who are in accordance with Devadatta's view are because of impropriety...

Listen to that which has become suffering. Bhikshus, in a past time, in a certain place, there were two leaders of monkey troops, each with five hundred followers. One of them, together with his troop, went to a hill. On that hill was a tree called Kimapaka, laden with fruit, and the monkeys said to their leader: "Leader, there is a tree here with particularly abundant fruit, laden with fruit. We are all hungry, please let us enjoy these fruits." The leader examined the tree and said in verse: "Even though it is near the village, children have eaten things on this path. From this, I infer that the fruit of this tree is not suitable for eating." Having said this, he left. The other leader of the monkey troop also followed that troop and gradually reached that hill. The monkeys saw the Kimapaka tree and said to their leader: "Leader, there are fruits on the tree, we are all hungry, please let us enjoy these fruits and then depart in peace." He said: "Very well, do so." They ate those fruits, and as a result, they all suffered greatly because of their impropriety. Bhikshus, what do you think? The first leader at that time was none other than myself. The second leader at that time was this very Devadatta. At that time, whoever agreed with my views departed in peace. Whoever agreed with Devadatta's views suffered greatly because of their impropriety. Even now, whoever agrees with my views peacefully crosses the great ocean of samsara. Whoever agrees with Devadatta's views has become wicked because of their impropriety. When Devadatta threw a stone because he was opposed to the Blessed One, the Brahmins and householders quarreled, saying that they would kill Devadatta. Since the world has friendly, unfriendly, and neutral people, another Devadatta

Then, frightened, he (Devadatta) leaned against a tree and sat with peaceful conduct. Seeing him behaving peacefully in that way, they said, 'Wise ones, how could the great being Devadatta kill the Blessed One?' Some said, 'We have been deceived, let us return!' and they returned. The monks, hearing that Devadatta was abiding with such conduct, and therefore had neither disturbed the villagers nor killed them, became doubtful. To dispel all doubts, they asked the Blessed One, Shakyamuni Buddha, 'Venerable One, behold how Devadatta deceives the world with conduct resembling the Dharma.' The Blessed One replied, 'Monks, not only now, but in the past he also deceived mice with conduct resembling the Dharma. Listen! 'Monks, in the past, in a certain place, there lived a leader of a group of mice with five hundred attendants. There was a cat named Fire-born. When he was young, wherever he lived, he killed all the mice in the vicinity. Later, he grew old, and because of old age he could not suppress the enemy and could not catch mice. He thought, 'When I was young, I could suppress the enemy and catch mice, but now I cannot. However, I must devise a way to eat them.' So he stealthily searched for mice. As he searched, he learned that there was a group of five hundred mice. He then practiced asceticism with deceitful austerity not far from the holes of those mice. The mice, wandering around, saw him abiding with peaceful conduct. They stood at a distance and asked, 'Grandfather, what are you doing?' He said, 'When I was young, I did many non-virtuous deeds, and in order to exhaust those deeds, I am practicing asceticism.' The mice thought, 'He has abandoned non-Dharma and sins.' Therefore, faith arose in him from the cause of Dharma. They circumambulated him every day and then entered their holes. He would seize the last one among them, seize them and eat them. After some time, the group dwindled, and the leader of the group thought, 'My mice have become few, and the mice'
