The venerable Shariputra was sitting on the right side. The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana was sitting on the left side. Then, Devadatta said to the venerable Shariputra: "Shariputra, you are not comfortable with me behind you, please remove that for a while, and you should boldly speak the Dharma to the monks." The venerable Shariputra did not speak, but agreed to Devadatta. Then, Devadatta spread out four robes, folded the sanghati and put it as a pillow, and lay down on his right side and fell asleep. Then the venerable Shariputra blessed him in such a way that he made a sound of snoring while lying on his back. Then, the venerable Shariputra said to the monks: "Venerable ones, look at the Teacher lying on his back and snoring while sleeping." Then, the venerable Shariputra said this to the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana: "Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, create disgust for the assembly." Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, as he placed his mind in sameness, manifested above the sky in the eastern direction and performed four kinds of conduct: walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. He also entered into the fire samadhi. When he entered into the fire samadhi, rays of blue, yellow, red, white, light blue, and crystal colors emanated from the body of the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana. He also performed the twin miracle, causing fire to blaze from the lower part of his body and a stream of cold water to descend from the upper part of his body. Causing fire to blaze from the upper part of his body and a stream of cold water to descend from the lower part of his body, he entered into such a samadhi. Just as in the eastern direction, so also in the southern, western, and northern directions. After showing the four kinds of miracles in the four directions, he gathered those manifestations of magical power and sat on the prepared seat. The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana caused the monks to feel disgust. Then, the venerable Shariputra

Then the monks preached such Dharma that whoever heard it would abandon Devadatta, and again said: Venerable ones, whoever among you likes the Teacher, let them come, let's go! When the Venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana departed, those monks also followed them step by step. Kokalika urged Devadatta: Come, come, the great Shravakas have stolen your retinue! Then the Venerable Shariputra thought: If Devadatta is led away without seeing his retinue, he will vomit blood and die, this situation exists. In short, let him only see (his retinue) and be led away. After thinking this, they proceeded slowly with the conduct of walking, together with the Sangha of monks, and Devadatta was extremely enraged, his eyes bloodshot and red. The Venerable Shariputra conjured up a supremely terrifying abyss, so deep that the bottom was invisible. Devadatta, together with Kokalika, Khanda-dhrabya, Kati-mora-katishya, and Ocean-given, began to circle around that abyss, but could not cross it. He thought: Not only will I not obtain a retinue, but I will also suffer because of impropriety. Thinking this, he returned. The Venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana also led the Sangha of monks to where the Blessed One was. Then those monks regretted: We have abandoned the Blessed One, who possesses immeasurable qualities, and relied on the sinful Devadatta, how foolish! They felt remorse in their hearts, felt ashamed, were dejected, drooped their shoulders, and lowered their heads before the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, knowing the minds of those monks with his wisdom, said to the monks: Monks, it is good that you have come! It is good that you have renounced! You have well obtained a human body, because only occasionally out of a hundred times can one be born in the realm of the noble ones, and not be without faculties, not be foolish, not be as dumb as a sheep, not express oneself with gestures, but be able to speak well, and even those who speak wrongly can understand the meaning of the Dharma. Only occasionally out of a hundred times is it like that.

The departed, the worthy ones, the perfectly enlightened Buddhas appear in the world. In a hundred paths, occasionally the Dharma and Vinaya spoken by the Thus-Gone Ones appear, teaching the Dharma in the world. Monks, therefore, it is difficult to obtain, and it is very difficult to descend, namely, to be born in a noble place, not to be incomplete in faculties, not to be foolish, not to have a body like a puppet, not to make gestures, and for those who speak well and those who speak badly to be able to understand the meaning of the Dharma. Now, the teacher in the world, the Thus-Gone One, the worthy one, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Blissful One, the Knower of the World, the unsurpassed tamer of beings, the teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, arises and teaches the Dharma, which leads to peace, to complete liberation from suffering, to perfect enlightenment, as well spoken by the Blissful One, namely: because this exists, that arises; because this is born, that is born. For example, due to ignorance, there is action; due to action, there is consciousness; due to consciousness, there are name and form; due to name and form, there are the six sense bases; due to the six sense bases, there is contact; due to contact, there is feeling; due to feeling, there is craving; due to craving, there is grasping; due to grasping, there is becoming; due to becoming, there is birth; due to birth, there arise old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and agitation. Thus, this great mass of suffering arises. For example, because this does not exist, that does not arise; because this ceases, that ceases. For example, with the cessation of ignorance, action ceases; with the cessation of action, consciousness ceases; with the cessation of consciousness, name and form cease; with the cessation of name and form, the six sense bases cease; with the cessation of the six sense bases, contact ceases; with the cessation of contact, feeling ceases; with the cessation of feeling, craving ceases; with the cessation of craving, grasping ceases; with the cessation of grasping, becoming ceases; with the cessation of becoming, birth ceases; with the cessation of birth, old age and death cease.
