A disciple of that hermit said: Abbot, please tell me what those verses are like? That hermit began to recite those verses in order: Alas, alas, in this world, Things that are not Dharma are detestable. Not gathering groups of people, There exists the act of killing friends. Killing friends in any situation, Will not bring happiness. Not on a seat, not on a road, Not sitting, not standing, not even walking. He falls, his heart makes a "je je" sound. What kind of words were spoken about this? He burns sentient beings with evil minds like a flame. Having done extremely detestable deeds, You will surely in the next world, Experience the feeling of touching suffering, It will not be peaceful, you will experience it. You are more vile than the vile, Called extremely detestable. Proclaiming "Alas, alas," Obtaining great evil suffering. To that cruel one who does unwholesome deeds, What kind of deeds did he do? Not gathering groups of people, There exists the act of killing friends. Destroying the Dharma is detestable, Know that the mind is sinful. Remember the sins you committed against the bear, And all that you did to the tiger. Evil-minded you, Do not know how to treat a friend, By killing, one obtains killing, Those with blood feuds will see hatred. When great fear of the tiger arose, You served it for a long time, Even when sleeping, you protected it, But you did not protect it. Enmity among friends, The Dharma speakers will relate. Evil-minded one, after the body is destroyed, You will be reborn in the hells. Monks, what do you think? The bear at that time was myself. The person who was ungrateful at that time was this Devadatta. Even then, he was ungrateful and unappreciative.
