Depending on you, the pure one, today I have obtained the flawless and pure eye, and have obtained the peaceful state of the noble ones, and have crossed the ocean of suffering. The one who is worshipped by gods, demigods, humans, and gods among beings, the one who is free from birth, old age, sickness, and death, the one who is extremely rare to see as emptiness, today I have seen you, the capable one, and it is fruitful. Then, with ornaments hanging down, prostrating at his feet, joy arose, and having circumambulated from right to left, he went to the sky, manifesting towards the world of the gods. Then, the son of the gods who was formerly an elephant, like a merchant who has gained profit, like a farmer who has had a good harvest, like a hero who has won a battle, and like a sick person who has been completely freed from all diseases, with whatever wealth he came before the Blessed One, he returned to his own place with that same wealth. When the monks, without sleeping in the upper and lower parts of the night, abide diligently in yoga, they see a great light before the Blessed One. Having seen it, they became doubtful and asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, what is it? Last night, was it Brahma, the lord of the Sahā world, or Indra, the lord of the gods, or the four guardians of the world who came to see the Blessed One? The Blessed One said: Monks, the one who came to see me was neither Brahma, the lord of the Sahā world, nor Indra, the lord of the gods, nor the four guardians of the world. However, monks, did you see that noble elephant named Protector of Wealth, who was so fierce and so violent, who oppressed others in order to kill the Tathāgata? Venerable one, we saw him. I tamed him and made him have great faith in me, and after he died, he was born among the gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings. He came before me last night, and I taught him the Dharma, and he realized the truth, and then he returned to his own place. The monks became doubtful and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: Venerable one, what kind of karma did Protector of Wealth commit that, as a result of that karma, he was born as an animal?

What kind of actions must one perform to be born among the gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings and to see the truth? The Blessed One said: Monks, this Protector of Wealth, having performed and accumulated actions that bring about the attainment of karmic results, the transformation of circumstances, and abiding as they come to pass without fail, from "they will become fruits for sentient beings" as before. Monks, in the past, in this very Fortunate Aeon, when the life span of beings was twenty thousand years, a teacher, a Buddha, a Blessed One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, an unsurpassed tamer of beings, a teacher of gods and humans, named Light Protector, appeared in the world. He dwelt near the city called Varanasi, in the Deer Park where sages speak. In his teaching, this one went forth and served as an attendant, but because he did not respect the very small precepts, he was born as an animal due to the maturation of that very action. Because he had made offerings to the Sangha, he obtained food and drink. Because he died with strong faith in me, he was born among the gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings. Furthermore, because he went forth into the fully enlightened Light Protector, and recited, remembered, and was skilled in the aggregates, skilled in the elements, skilled in the sense bases, and skilled in dependent origination, he became a god and saw the truth from me. Monks, therefore, from "one should strive for purely white actions" with respect to those purely black actions, monks, you should train yourselves in this way, as before. The Kauśika Section.
