Without being invited, he diligently did good deeds. Exhausted, he still climbed that tree and began to pick mangoes. He let that man eat mangoes as much as he wanted, and also filled his bag. Bodhisattvas are compassionate towards all sentient beings, so that monkey king came down and said to that man: 'Hey, sir, I am tired, I want to sleep for a while, please guard me for a while.' That man said: 'As you wish.' After he fell asleep, that man thought: 'I am already full, if I eat the mangoes, what can I offer to the king? It is better to kill this monkey, dry the meat, and take it on the road.' So, that person without compassion, who had forgotten the afterlife, killed it with a large stone. The god said in verse: 'The characteristic of benefiting others, and likewise, gratitude is called a friend. However, some people do not even know the good deeds that others have done for them.' Monks, what do you think? The monkey king at that time was me. The garland maker at that time was Devadatta. Even then, he was ungrateful and unappreciative. Even now, he is ungrateful and unappreciative. Furthermore, listen to how he is ungrateful and unappreciative. Monks, in the past, the Bodhisattva lived in an uncertain body, in a solitary place without towns, a place full of hills, caves, water, flowers, and fruits, born among the birds, and became a bird called the Bird Tree. On the other side of that mountain, there was a lion, the king of deer, living as he pleased, killing and devouring deer. At another time, because he ate meat, a bone got stuck between his teeth, and although he felt fear and unease, the sensation in his teeth harmed his body, he became weak and unable to eat. Coincidentally, that Bird Tree, accustomed to jumping from one tree to another, came from that direction to the direction where the deer king was. It saw that the lion was tormented by the feeling of suffering,

He said, "Uncle, why are you groaning?" He said, "Nephew, I am afflicted by the feeling of suffering." "What kind of suffering are you in?" He explained in detail. He said, "Uncle, I have diagnosed you as a lion, the leader of all quadrupeds, so you are able to help. Please help me from time to time." He said: "So be it." The tree spirit thought, "Just as he doesn't feel what he is doing, so I will diagnose him like this, let him recover, and then he will know." He wholeheartedly wanted to help him, observing his behavior and dwelling place. Soon, the deer king was soothed by the comfortable breeze, his pain subsided, and he lay down to sleep facing a wide stone. Then, the tree spirit came to the deer king's side, saw him lying so comfortably, and thought, "Now is the time to treat him." He carefully observed, used leaves to move the bone that was stuck in the decay, quickly pulled it out, and the deer king woke up from his deep sleep, opened his eyes, and stood up. Then, the tree spirit saw that the deer king was free from suffering and discomfort, his heart filled with joy, and he went to his side and said, "Uncle, the cause of your suffering was this bone." Then, the deer king was very surprised and said, "Nephew, to repay your kindness, I will definitely help you again, from time to time." "Okay, so be it." Having said that, the tree spirit left. Not long after, the deer king was enjoying meat, and the tree spirit was also caught by an eagle, fell from a cliff, and was starving and disheartened. He went to the deer king's side and pitifully said, "Uncle, I am tormented by hunger, please give me a little meat." He said in verse, "Now I am in the midst of killing, and also a fierce and evil person, yet you come between my fangs, do you not remember the great kindness of saving your life?" He also said in verse, "Falling into the sea and clinging to a corpse, dreams are meaningless, what is the use of relying on an evil man?"

Yes, doing is inappropriate, doing is meaningless. The Blessed One said: Monks, what do you think? Who was the carpenter at that time, that was me. Who was the deer king at that time, that was Devadatta. Even then, doing was inappropriate, doing was not felt. Even now, doing is inappropriate, doing is not felt. Furthermore, how is doing inappropriate, doing is not felt, listen. Monks, in the past, there lived a poor man in the city of Varanasi who made a living by selling wood. One time, he got up early in the morning, took an axe and a carrying pole, and went to the forest to collect firewood. At this time, an untimely heavy rain, with a strong wind, arose. The man thought, is it good here, or is it good there, searching for the difference in places, going from this tree to the foot of that tree, but still he was soaked. So he passed through the bushes and gradually entered a cave. He saw a bear living in that cave, and was frightened and tried to run away. The bear said: Child, why are you afraid? Child, do not be afraid, stay with me. He was very scared and could not leave. Then the bear sighed, hugged him with both hands, and satisfied him with roots and fruits. The bad weather lasted for seven days, and the lightning did not stop the rain. Seven days passed, and on the eighth day, the rain cleared and the bear looked in all directions, gave him many roots and fruits, and said to the man: Child, the rain has cleared and the bad weather is gone, go as you please. The man knelt on the ground and said: Father, if I leave, how should I repay you? The bear said: Child, in any case, do not tell anyone about me, that is repaying me. The man said: Yes, I will do that. Then he circled the bear, bowed to the bear's feet, and left. He entered the city of Varanasi, and a hunter who was going hunting saw the man and said: Friend, where have you been for so long? Your wife and children, because you encountered an untimely seven-day rain,
