His wisdom arose, and he began to praise the fox, thinking that perhaps it would give me the leftovers. So he began to praise it in verse: "Like the throat of a lion, like the leader of a herd of cattle, I bow to you, king of beasts! Please consider the alms I beg for!" The fox looked and said again in verse: "Best of birds, sky-goers, illuminating all directions, beautiful as precious coral, dwelling on the top of the best tree, who is this?" The crow said: "In order to behold the blessed one, I am present before you, I bow to you, king of beasts! Please consider the alms I beg for!" The fox said: "You crow, beautiful as the neck of a peacock, chief of those who bring joy, please enjoy the grease as you please!" When it came down to eat the corpse of the eunuch with the fox, a hermit saw it, and he said in verse: "In the worst shade of the tree, sitting shamelessly, enjoying the worst corpse, alas, I have seen it after a long time!" The crow heard it, and unable to bear it, said in verse: "Like this, lions and peacocks are enjoying sacred meat, what does the bald head who lives on the alms of others belong to here?" That hermit also could not bear it, and anger arose, and he said in verse: "The worst of birds is the crow, the worst of quadrupeds is the fox, the worst of trees is the Eranda tree, the worst of men is the corpse of the eunuch, the worst of fields is the triangular field, look at these shameless ones gathered together!" After that, the crow was even more unbearable, and entered the hermit's fire room and began to peep, but saw nothing, so he broke the oil pot and fled. When the hermit entered the fire room, he saw that the oil pot was broken, and he thought: "This must have been done by that vicious crow, it could not have been anyone else." Realizing this, he said in verse: "Do not say such things, with a shameless and vicious heart, destroying the fire room that should not be destroyed, and also breaking the oil pot. Even if it is worthy of praise, it is also worthy of criticism, do not say even a little bit. The wise should always be silent, so that they can be happy."

obtained. The Buddha told the monks, "What do you think? The hermit at that time was me. The fox at that time was Devadatta. The crow at that time was Kokalika. Even then, those shameless ones praised the shameless. Even now, these shameless ones praise the shameless." The monks became doubtful and, in order to dispel all doubts, asked the Buddha Shakyamuni: "Venerable Lord, where did Devadatta and the Lord first become discordant?" The Lord replied: "Monks, in the past there were two Shangshangtiwu, united in one body, living by the sea, called Righteous and Unrighteous. When the Unrighteous was asleep, the Righteous was making a fire. He saw an amrita fruit being carried away by the water, so he picked it up and thought: 'Should I wake him up? Or should I eat it?' Then he thought: 'Even if I eat it, it will only nourish this one body,' so he didn't wake him up. When he woke up, the Righteous burped up the amrita fruit, and the Unrighteous felt it and said: 'What kind of burp is that?' He said: 'It's from the amrita fruit.' 'Where did you get it?' He said: 'When you were asleep, I found the amrita fruit and thought it would only nourish one body, so I didn't wake you up, and I ate it myself.' He said: 'You did something bad, and I will find a chance to retaliate.' After a while, the Righteous fell asleep, and the Unrighteous was making a fire. He saw a pilīṅga fruit being carried away by the water, so he ate it. As a result, they both fainted. The Unrighteous, tormented by the poisonous fruit, said: 'In whatever lifetimes I am born, I will kill you, retaliate against you, and be your enemy!' The Righteous said: 'In whatever lifetimes I am born, I will cultivate loving-kindness towards you.' The Lord said: 'Monks, what do you think? The Righteous at that time was me.'

That which is not the Dharma of that time is Devadatta. There, initially, I and this person were not in harmony. I also held a compassionate heart towards him. Furthermore, how he was not in harmony with me, and how I held compassion for him, listen to this. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Strong Wealth, who was wealthy, prosperous, happy, had good harvests, and was filled with many people and populace, and he was allowed to rule the kingdom. He took a daughter of a king from another country and played with her, rejoiced, and indulged in joy. He played, rejoiced, and indulged in joy, and that daughter at another time became pregnant, and when she was eight or nine months along, at the peak of the sun, she gave birth to a handsome, beautiful, and lovely boy. A grand birth celebration was held for his birth, and they were naming the boy, wondering what to name him. The ministers said: This divine boy was born at the peak of the umbrella, therefore, the boy's name should be called Sun Halo. Thus, his name was named Sun Halo, and the boy Sun Halo was entrusted to eight mothers, two who nurtured him on their laps, two who nursed him, two who wiped away dirt, and two who were playmates. Those eight mothers nurtured him with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, the essence of ghee, and other chief necessities, causing him to grow quickly like a lotus in a pond. When he became great, he approached letters, numbers, arithmetic, and crafts, and the king, crowned from the head of the royal family, obtained land, wealth, and power, and having manifestly subdued the great circle of the earth, the craftsmen and occupations of those who dwell there were different, such as: elephant riders, horse riders, chariot methods, sword methods, throwing, retreating, advancing, methods of moving with hooks, and shooting arrows.
