He declared: Monks, not only now, but also in the past, he gave himself up for me, listen to that. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Brahmadeva, who was rich, prosperous, happy, had good harvests, and was full of people, and he ruled the kingdom. At that time, not far from the city of Varanasi, there was a dwelling place with abundant roots, flowers, fruits, and water, and various birds chirping. There lived a hermit who practiced severe austerities, enjoying water, roots, and fruits, and wearing animal skins and bark. Near that dwelling place, there was a hunter who lived by killing wild animals, and he would come to the hermit from time to time. The hermit would always let him rest and strengthen him with roots and fruits, so that he would not kill the wild animals living near him. The two of them developed a father-son relationship with each other, and the hunter called the hermit father. The hermit also called the hunter son. At one point, King Brahmadeva woke up early in the morning and, in pursuit of a fleeing wild animal, shot an arrow at a wild animal and entered the hermit's dwelling. There, the king shot it again with an iron arrow, causing it to die. Then, the hermit, surrounded by anger, said: King, you are a wicked and depraved person! You killed the wild animal that came to me for refuge! The king, surrounded by anger, with an attached mind, said to the ministers: Wise ministers, what punishment should be given to a king who is crowned from the head, that is, the so-called "Kacha"? The ministers said: O God, he should be put to death. The king said: If that is the case, then I abandon this hermit. When the ministers began to kill the hermit, it happened that the hunter was also near the hermit, and he thought: While I am alive, this hermit

Thinking, "Why are you going to kill me?" When he began to fight, the hermit fled, and the great army killed him. The Blessed One said: "Monks, what do you think? Who was that hermit at that time? It was I. Who was that hunter at that time? It was the Yaksha Kunbira. Even then, he gave himself up for me. Even now, he gives himself up for me." The Blessed One's foot was wounded by a piece of stone, and the blood could not be stopped, so it was left as it was. The king of physicians, Jivaka, went before the Blessed One three times a day to examine his illness. The faithful people living in Rajagriha, and the wealthy, merchants, and captains who had come from various countries, also came. There, some said: "This physician Jivaka is good for that." Others said: "This is even better than that." The king of physicians, Jivaka, said: "There is a medicine here that can heal quickly, but it is difficult to find." The venerable Ananda said: "Jivaka, what is it?" He said: "It is excellent sandalwood." At that time, excellent sandalwood could not be found at all. Then a merchant thought: "I once sold excellent sandalwood in time, but Ajatashatru is a cruel and ruthless, greedy person. If he happens to need excellent sandalwood, and if he cannot find it, he will surely cut off my head without eating." Thinking, he had some mixed excellent sandalwood stored away. When he heard the king of physicians, Jivaka, say that the Blessed One's illness could be healed with excellent sandalwood, he thought: "Ajatashatru has been bewitched by Devadatta and has a hostile mind towards the Blessed One. If I offer excellent sandalwood to the Blessed One, there will be a place to harm me." He also thought: "The Blessed One is worshiped by gods and humans, and even if I give up my life for his sake, it is worth it. In any case, I will offer excellent sandalwood to the Blessed One."

Thinking thus, he took the supreme sandalwood ground and went before the Blessed One, touched his feet and said: "Blessed One, I offer this supreme sandalwood ground to the Blessed One, but I do not know what use it has. If it could reach your ears, I beseech the Blessed One to accept it with compassion." Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ānanda: "Ānanda, take the supreme sandalwood ground from this great being." The venerable Ānanda took it. Then, that merchant felt joy and satisfaction, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and departed from the presence of the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One smiled. By the nature of Dharma, whenever the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, smile, rays of blue, yellow, red, white, and dark blue light emanate from their faces. Some rays go downwards, and some go upwards. Those that go downwards illuminate the hells of sentient beings, such as the Reviving Hell, the Black Line Hell, the Crushing Hell, the Howling Hell, the Great Howling Hell, the Hot Hell, the Very Hot Hell, the Uninterrupted Hell, the Blistering Hell, the Bursting Blister Hell, the Gnashing Teeth Hell, the Kyi Hud Hell, the A-chu Hell, the Hell where it cracks like a blue lotus, the Hell where it cracks like a lotus, and the Hell where it cracks like a great lotus. All the hot hells become cool and the cold hells become warm. This light cuts off the various sufferings of the hell beings. They think: "Sages, have we died and transmigrated from here? Or have we been reborn elsewhere?" In order to make them generate this thought first, the Blessed One sends forth emanations. When they see the emanations, they think: "Sages, we have neither died and transmigrated from here, nor have we been reborn elsewhere, but by the power of this previously unseen sentient being, our various sufferings have ceased." Then, they develop great faith in the emanations, thereby exhausting the karma that would cause them to experience the suffering of hell, and ultimately becoming vessels of truth.
