Adorned with land, Devadatta, surrounded by all, dwells in a fierce place, ascending Vulture Peak Mountain, now! These are my deeds. Then those five hundred people fled. The knowledge of the gods is to enter downwards, then the Yaksha Vajrapani thought thus: Devadatta is suppressing others for the sake of the Bhagavan's passing away, thinking thus. Wherever the Yaksha Kumbhira was, he went there, and having gone, he spoke thus to the Yaksha Kumara: Devadatta is trying to throw stones at the Bhagavan with a catapult on Vulture Peak Mountain, and the Bhagavan is staying in your place, therefore I will try to destroy the stones into powder in the sky with a vajra, if the pieces of powder fall on the Bhagavan, please help! He said: I will do as you command, the Bhagavan is staying in a place without cover, and then went into a mountain cave. Devadatta and his five hundred attendants pulled the catapult and threw stones at the Bhagavan. The Yaksha Vajrapani made it into powder with a vajra, half of which was about to fall on the Bhagavan's place, the Yaksha Kumbhira did not catch it well and was killed, and a piece of stone flying upwards wounded the Bhagavan's foot. Then the Bhagavan at that time spoke this verse: Wherever one dwells, one cannot escape the pursuit of karma, there is no such place, not in the sky, not in the ocean, nor is it entering a mountain cave. The Yaksha Kumbhira also died with a virtuous mind, and after death was born among the gods of the Thirty-three Heavens. According to the Dharma, a son or daughter of the gods, not long after birth, will have three thoughts arise: from where did they die and transmigrate, where were they born, and what karma caused it. He saw that he had died and transmigrated from a Yaksha, was born among the gods of the Thirty-three Heavens, and had developed great faith in the Bhagavan. Then the son of the gods who used to be a Yaksha thought thus: After a few days, I will go to visit the Bhagavan.

Going to see is not my duty, but rather so that I can, before I grow old, go to behold and attend to the Blessed One. Then, the son of a god who used to be a yaksha, wearing immaculate and swaying earrings, adorned his body with necklaces and armlets, on that night, covered the entire Vulture Peak Mountain (Grdhrakuta) with celestial lotus flowers, lotuses, water lilies, white lotuses, and mandārava flowers, illuminated it with vast light, and scattered flowers to the Blessed One, sitting down to listen to the Dharma in the presence of the Blessed One. The Blessed One understood his thoughts, habits, inclinations, and nature, and taught him such a Dharma that whoever heard it would be able to realize the Four Noble Truths individually. Then, the son of a god who used to be a yaksha, with the vajra of wisdom, destroyed the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates, realized the fruit of stream-entry, saw the truth, and specially uttered verses three times. Venerable one, you are not a father to me, not a mother, not a king, not the gods, not asceticism, not my own kinsmen and relatives, not the departed ones of the past, not the shramanas and brahmins could do what the Blessed One has done for me. You have dried up the ocean of blood and tears, liberated me from the mountain of bones, closed the gates of the evil realms, opened the gates of the heavens and liberation, and placed me among gods and humans. Again he said: By your power, you have blocked the path of the evil realms, which are full of sins and detestable, and opened the path of the heavens, which are full of merit, and I have also attained the path of nirvāṇa. Relying on you, today I have obtained the very pure eye, the pure eye free from faults. Having attained the peaceful state, I have crossed the ocean of suffering. In saṃsāra, worshiped by asuras, gods, and humans, free from birth, old age, sickness, and death, one who is extremely difficult to see in countless aeons, today I have the fruit of seeing you, the capable one. Then, that necklace swaying, prostrated to the two feet of the Buddha, and circumambulated the Victorious One to the right.

After circumambulating, it went to the sky in the direction of the visible realm of the gods. Then, that son of a god who was formerly a yaksha, like a merchant who has gained profit, a farmer who has had a good harvest, a hero who has won on the battlefield, and a sick person who has been completely freed from all diseases, with whatever attainment he went before the Blessed One, he returned to his own abode with that very attainment. Monks, when they do not sleep in the first and last parts of the night, but abide by diligently practicing yoga, they see that great appearance before the Blessed One. Having seen it, they arose with doubt and asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, what is this? Last night, was it Brahma, the lord of the Sahā world, or Indra, the lord of the gods, or the four world guardians who came to see the Blessed One? The Blessed One said: Monks, it was not Brahma, the lord of the Sahā world, who came to see me, nor was it Indra, the lord of the gods, nor were it the four world guardians. However, that Devadatta, striving to kill me, the great stone thrown from the mountain of Vulture Peak, which was pulverized by the vajra-handed yaksha, half of which fell on me, was mistakenly seized by the yaksha Kumbhīra, and he was killed by it. Having died with great faith in my mind, he was born among the wealthy gods of the Thirty-three. He came before me last night, and I taught him the Dharma, and having made him see the truth, he returned to his own abode. Monks, therefore, the ripening of completely black actions is completely black, and the ripening of completely white actions is completely white, and the ripening of mixed actions is mixed. Monks, therefore, completely black actions and mixed actions should be abandoned, and completely white actions should be cultivated. Monks, you should train in such a way. The monks arose with doubt and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: Venerable One, look at the yaksha Kunbīra who has given himself up for the sake of the Blessed One. The Blessed One
