On the summit of Vulture Peak Mountain, a catapult was placed. Those five hundred catapult operators were also stationed there. In another place, two hundred and fifty people were stationed and ordered: 'If you cannot kill the ascetic Gautama with the catapult, you must kill him.' For this purpose, people were stationed in other places as well, and everyone was ordered: 'Whenever the ascetic Gautama arrives, those people must kill him.' I myself will stay in another direction, thinking: 'These people will flee, and I will kill him.' When the five hundred people began to launch the catapult, they said: 'For whom are we launching the catapult?' When they saw the Blessed One Buddha residing at the foot of the mountain, they said: 'Wise ones, we would rather sacrifice our own lives than kill the supreme god and the Blessed One Buddha who is worshipped by people; let us launch stones!' So they launched stones, and those stones, around Vulture Peak Mountain, collided with each other, and they thought: 'From where can we descend without being seen by Devadatta?' They were thinking like this. The Blessed One understood their thoughts and conjured up a staircase. When they saw the staircase, they thought: 'Wise ones, who built this staircase?' They thought: 'This must be the power of the Blessed One.' Then, they developed even stronger faith in the Blessed One, descended from that staircase, and went to where the Blessed One was. The Blessed One, solely to tame them, was walking and staying on Vulture Peak Mountain. Then, they bowed their heads to the two feet of the Blessed One and sat before him to listen to the Dharma. The Blessed One, knowing their thoughts, habits, dispositions, and nature, taught them the Dharma in such a way that by hearing it, each of them would individually realize the Four Noble Truths. They shattered the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates with the vajra of wisdom, directly realized the fruit of stream-entry, and specifically proclaimed three times, specifically proclaiming: 'Venerable one, please believe us. Mother has not done it, the king has not done it, the gods have not done it, suffering has not done it.'

It was not done by one's own relatives and retinue, nor by the deceased of the past, nor by ascetics and Brahmins. The Blessed One has done this for us: He has drawn us out of hell, animals, and hungry ghosts, and has placed us well in the realms of gods and humans. He has brought an end to samsara, dried up the ocean of blood and tears, delivered us from the mountain of bones, closed the doors of the lower realms, and opened the doors of higher realms and liberation. Having destroyed the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates, accumulated since beginningless time, with the vajra of wisdom, we have directly realized the fruit of stream-entry. Monks, we are noble ones! Truly noble ones! We go for refuge to the Blessed One, the Dharma, and the Sangha of monks. We beseech the Blessed One to accept us as lay followers. From this day forward, for as long as we live, even at the cost of our lives, we will go for refuge, and we have unwavering faith. After saying this, they began to take the five precepts in the presence of the Blessed One. The master of illusory arts also thought, "This person is going to kill the Buddha, the Blessed One." So, following after them, he went down the stairs and fled, carrying a hundred thousand strings of pearl necklaces. Devadatta, who delighted in throwing stones, thought, "I haven't thrown a stone yet!" So, he himself led another five hundred people and began to climb Vulture Peak Mountain. Those five hundred people saw the Blessed One listening to the Dharma in his presence. Having seen this, they became even more unbearable and climbed Vulture Peak Mountain from another direction. When he saw that the master of illusory arts had also fled, he himself, with his five hundred attendants, began to throw stones. The Blessed One thought, "I myself have done and accumulated the deeds that will obtain karmic results, transform conditions, be as close as light, and not be devoured by demons. Who else will experience separately the deeds that I myself have done and accumulated?" Thinking this, the Blessed One said to those five hundred people:
