The earth said, "His name is known as the most supreme of the victorious ones, the victorious one among the multitude." The monks arose with doubt, and in order to dispel all doubt, they asked the Blessed One, the Buddha: "Venerable one, what did King Embodied Heart do, that the ripening of that karma caused him to be born into a wealthy, rich, and abundantly enjoying royal family, and to see the truth in the presence of the Blessed One? And having cut off his hands and feet with a razor, he gave them as alms, and was tormented by hunger and thirst, and died." The Blessed One said: "Monks, this King Embodied Heart has done and accumulated deeds that have obtained the accumulation of karma, transformed circumstances, abided like light, and will arise without being devoured by demons. Who else will experience separately the deeds done and accumulated by Embodied Heart? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor will they ripen in the realm of water, nor will they ripen in the realm of fire, nor will they ripen in the realm of wind. But thus, the good and bad deeds done and accumulated will only ripen in the aggregates, realms, and sources that have been taken. Deeds, even after hundreds of eons, will not be wasted; when the time of gathering is found, they will become fruits for embodied beings. Monks, in the past, when Buddhas did not arise, solitary Buddhas, compassionate to the lowly and the wicked, delighting in remote dwellings, and the sole objects of offering in the world, would arise. When a solitary Buddha was wandering and traveling, he went to Varanasi and stayed for the night in the workshop of a potter in Varanasi. A guest also took up residence in that workshop, and that guest defecated there and left that very night. Arhats and solitary Buddhas do not unintentionally see wisdom, so the solitary Buddha thought, 'I should beg for alms here.' And so he stayed there. When the potter entered the workshop the next morning, he saw the disgusting filth. Ordinary people."

It is non-attention, therefore he treated the Pratyekabuddha with an extremely malicious mind, and he said with hatred in his heart: O renunciate, were your two feet cut by a razor? Why did you defecate in the workshop and not go outside? He closed the door and left him there to die of thirst and hunger. That great being thought: The afflictions will diminish, and if I open the door and leave, it will diminish even more, so he stayed there without saying a word. After a while, the potter reached mealtime, and he was free from the entanglement of anger, and he said: Hey, renunciate, please have the meal, please come over. The Pratyekabuddha said: Good sir, I partake at the appointed time, and it is already past the time. He said: If that is the case, then stay here, and please leave after having the meal tomorrow. He agreed because he had compassion for him. The next day, he satisfied him with food obtained through alms. Those great beings teach the Dharma not with words but with their bodies, so he manifested in the sky above and began to perform miracles of burning, shining, raining, and lightning. Ordinary people quickly place their minds on miracles, so he prostrated at his feet as if cutting off the root of a tree, and said: Great benefactor, please come down, please come down. Please pull me out of the mire of desire. After he came down, he prostrated at his feet and prayed: May I not be the bearer of the deed of offending such a holy object of offering. May the root of virtue of the deed done cause me to be born into a wealthy, rich, and abundantly enjoying family, and may I be able to please a teacher who is more excellent than this, and not displease him, and may I also obtain such Dharmas. Monks, what do you think? The potter at that time was this Venerable Katyayana, and because he treated the Pratyekabuddha with an extremely malicious mind and spoke harsh words, as a result of that karma, his two feet were cut off by a razor, and his hand

and was thrown in, and died of thirst and hunger. Because of his patience and prayers, the ripening of his karma caused him to be born into a wealthy and royal lineage, and also in my presence, he destroyed the twenty peaks of the mountain of viewing the assembly of destructibles with the vajra of wisdom, thus manifestly obtaining the fruit of entering the stream. Monks, therefore, the ripening of completely dark deeds is completely dark, the ripening of completely white deeds is completely white, and the ripening of mixed deeds is mixed. Monks, therefore, having abandoned completely dark deeds and mixed deeds, one should strive for completely white deeds. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. Vinaya Basis, Volume 102. The ministers said to Ajatashatru: The divine king is old and has erred. Having heard this, he fainted and fell to the ground. After being sprinkled with water, he regained his breath and entered the chamber of sorrow and sat down. No one was able to dispel his sorrow, so the ministers began to contemplate how to dispel his sorrow. At that time, a dancer came from the south. The ministers had him dance before him, but Ajatashatru was not pleased, and no one praised him. After the dancer left, the Blessed One also went in that direction. Having seen the Blessed One, he thought: If I were to do something for such a noble being, he would surely praise me. So, he developed great faith in the Blessed One and beat a large clay drum. Then, the Blessed One smiled. It is the nature of things that when the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, smile, blue, yellow, red, white, and light red rays of light emanate from their mouths, some going down and some going up. Those that go down illuminate sentient beings in the hells, namely, the reviving hell, the black line hell, the crushing hell, the wailing hell, the great wailing hell, the hot hell, the very hot hell, the uninterrupted hell, the blister hell, the bursting blister hell, the aṭaṭa hell, the hahaua hell, and the ababa hell.
