Those two are Devadatta and Ajatasatru. There, they themselves committed the offense, but blamed others. Now also, they themselves committed the offense, but blamed others. Furthermore, listen to how Devadatta was ungrateful and unappreciative. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Brahmadata who ruled the kingdom. At that time, a man carrying an axe and a carrying pole went to the forest for wood. As he was searching for wood there, he was frightened by a lion and ran away, falling into a pit. The lion, also intending to eat him, fell into the same pit. A snake, frightened by a mouse, ran away, and a hawk chased after the mouse to eat it. At that moment, they all fell into the pit. They were all filled with the malicious intent to kill each other. The lion said: Wise ones, all of you are my food. However, since we are all facing unbearable suffering, this is not the time to harm each other, so please stay still. By chance, a hunter searching for deer went in that direction. He began to look into the pit. They said with pleading words: Oh, master, please save us! Then, the hunter understood the situation and first pulled out the lion. The lion touched his feet with its head and said: I will surely repay your kindness. However, the black-headed one living here is an ungrateful person, so please do not save him. Having said that, he left. At that time, the hunter gradually pulled them all out. After some time, the lion killed a deer, and the hunter also went in that direction. The lion recognized him, touched the hunter's feet with its head, and gave him the deer. Another time, King Brahmadata went to the garden with his queen. He enjoyed happiness in that garden and then fell asleep. The queen and the women also stayed relaxed, took off their clothes to dry, took off their jewelry and placed it in various places, and walked, sat, lay down, and slept in the garden. At that time

Then a queen took off all her ornaments, put them aside, and fell asleep, and the thief took those ornaments and gave them to the hunter in order to repay him. King Shuddhodana, having dispelled his drowsiness, quickly entered Varanasi. The queen, the young man, the ministers, the townspeople, and the villagers also hurried along. When the queen searched for her ornaments but could not find them, she said to the king, "O god, I have lost my ornaments in the garden." The king commanded the ministers, "O wise ones, search for who has taken the lost ornaments." When they began to search, the black snake went to the hunter from time to time, and when he went to the hunter's house, he knew from the signs that he had the ornaments. The petty benefactor went to the king and reported it. Then the king was very angry, and the king's men summoned the hunter and said, "Hey, you wretch, you stole the ornaments from the garden!" Then he was afraid, told what had happened, and offered them to the king. However, that man was bound and put in prison. The mouse went to the snake and said, "That black-headed evildoer has done a deed, and our virtuous friend has been bound and imprisoned by the king." The snake said, "Hey, hunter, today I will bite the king, and you heal him with this mantra and these medicines. If that happens, the king will be pleased, release you without being eaten by ghosts, and will also share his wealth with you." He said, "Good, let it be so." The snake bit the king, and the hunter went and healed him with the mantra and the medicines. Then the king was pleased, released him from prison, and also shared his wealth with him. The Blessed One said, "Monks, what do you think? At that time, that hunter was myself. At that time, that ungrateful person was this Devadatta. Even then, he was ungrateful and unappreciative. Even now, he is ungrateful and unappreciative. Furthermore, how is he ungrateful and unappreciative?

Listen to that feeling. Monks, it happened in the past that clouds gathered for seven days out of season, The gods rained, and a mongoose entered a mouse's nest. A snake, also afraid of the rain, scurried back and forth and entered it as well. After a while, the mongoose began to kill the mouse, and the snake said: Knowledgeable ones, we have obtained refuge from unbearable suffering, do not harm each other, do not move, stay still. At that time, the snake's name was Joy Protector. The mongoose's name was Joyful. The mouse's name was Ganga Given. Joy Protector and Joyful said to Ganga Given: You go secretly and look for our food. Because it was upright and kind, it sincerely began to search for food for the two of them, but did not find it. Joyful said to Joy Protector: If Ganga Given does not return with food, I will eat it. Joy Protector thought: Even though we have obtained refuge from unbearable suffering, this fellow is still trying to kill it, let alone if it does not return with food, so I should tell it first, and so it told it. Joyful said: If Ganga Given does not return with food, I will eat it. Ganga Given searched for food but found nothing at all, and so it thought: I will surely be eaten, it will eat me, and so it told Joy Protector: The power of poverty and hunger is completely exhausted, You who are miserable and without compassion, Your deeds are in vain, to that sentient being, Ganga Given will not return, it said. Monks, what do you think? Who was Ganga Given at that time? It was I myself. Who was the mongoose Joyful at that time? It was Devadatta himself, and even then he was ungrateful and unappreciative. Even now he is ungrateful and unappreciative. When King Ajatashatru threw a vajra at King Bimbisara, the king rebuked him: Young man, why did you throw a vajra at me? He said: In order to seek anger, for the gods.
