Furthermore, at that time there were many remaining accumulated resources, and he also did a little bit, and then he had a dwelling built. There he spread out clothes and placed five karapanas each for the monks. He had a bearskin, which he also spread at the entrance of the dwelling. Then he cooked and mixed five hundred portions of food in a container, and with great respect offered it to the Fully Enlightened Buddha Vipashyin, offered an umbrella, touched his feet, and prayed: 'By this root of virtue, may I be born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family, and may I never set foot on a place without a covering. Just as the Fully Enlightened Buddha Vipashyin's soles of his feet have golden hairs about four fingers long, may I also obtain the same qualities and merits, and may I please such a teacher, and may I not displease him.' Monks, what do you think? The Brahmin boy of Gada at that time was this very Grosa-born-twenty-kotis. Because he served the Fully Enlightened Buddha Vipashyin and made prayers, as a result of that karma, he was born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family, and golden hairs about four fingers long grew on his feet, and from then until ninety-one kalpas, he never set foot on a place without a covering, and when he was born, he also received twenty kotis of gold as the price of his birth. After ordaining in my teaching, he also abandoned all defilements and realized the Arhat. Monks, therefore, the result of completely black karma is completely black, and the result of completely white karma is completely white, and the result of mixed karma is mixed. Monks, therefore, completely black karma and mixed karma should be abandoned, and completely white karma should be practiced. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. When the venerable one was controlled by the evil friend Devadatta,

When the vajra one-pointed peg was thrown at Prince Endowed with Form, the townspeople residing in the royal palace began to mock. Some of them spread unpleasant rumors about the king, saying, "It was prophesied that this child would become an enemy to his father even before he was born. Why was he not killed before he was born?" Others said, "Wise ones, does the king want all prophecies to come true? Although the young man is gentle, he has been deceived by Devadatta, an evil friend, and therefore has become deeply involved in evil deeds." Others said, "Wise ones, neither the king nor Devadatta is at fault. However, the Blessed One alone is at fault for bringing Devadatta here and not utterly banishing him from the realms of the world." Some said, "The Blessed One is not at fault, for the Sangha is at fault for not performing the act of expulsion." Then, those who spread unpleasant rumors about the king did not feel ashamed, thinking, "I have done and accumulated these deeds in past lives." But those who spread unpleasant rumors about the Blessed One and the Sangha, the king felt very ashamed, thinking, "This evil body of mine is speaking ill of the Blessed One and the Sangha." The monks became doubtful and asked the Blessed One, who cuts through all doubts, "Venerable one, look, others commit faults, but the blame is placed on others." The Blessed One said, "Monks, this is not only the case now. Listen to how this person in the past also committed faults and blamed others. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Brahmadatta, who was wealthy, prosperous, happy, and had good harvests, and who ruled the kingdom, filled with many people. He had two dogs named Cheek and Near Cheek, and these two took care of the king's horse armor equipment. After some time, when King Brahmadatta was about to put on his armor, he instructed his ministers, "Wise ones, inspect the horse armor equipment."

When they began to watch, they saw that everything was cut off and thoroughly chopped up, so they said to the king: O God, the horse's armor and so on have all been eaten. The king said: O wise ones, if that is so, I will completely abandon these dogs. Then, some were killed, and some fled. When a dog from another country came to Varanasi from somewhere, it saw those dogs fleeing and asked: O wise ones, why are you so afraid? They told in detail what had happened, and that dog said: Why didn't you report to the king? They said: The others have been eaten, and we are all fleeing, where is there an opportunity to report to the king? That dog said: Wait, and I will report to the king for your sake. It let them catch their breath and then returned. After that, it sat near the usual drinking place and, in verse, reported: In the king's palace there are two dogs, one called "Edge" and the other called "Near Edge," they are mighty and have bright colors. They eat things here because of my (dgu ma, Devanagari: गुम, Romanized Sanskrit: guma, literal meaning: nine) intestines. O God, it is not appropriate to eat nine (dgu ma, Devanagari: गुम, Romanized Sanskrit: guma, literal meaning: nine) intestines. When the king heard this, he ordered his ministers at dawn: O wise ones, find out who was reporting in verse last night. They ordered the attendants: O wise ones, find out who was reporting to God in verse last night. They said: It is the country dog. The king said: O wise ones, did "Edge" and "Near Edge" eat it? Or did the other dogs eat it? Find out. The ministers gathered together and began to discuss: O wise ones, the God has commanded to find out about the dogs, how should we investigate them? Others said: What else is there to investigate? Give them a ball of hair and make them vomit it out. They gave them a ball of hair and made them vomit it out, and as a result, the two dogs, "Edge" and "Near Edge," vomited out pieces of leather and reported it to the king. The king abandoned those two dogs and gave the remaining dogs freedom from fear. Monks, what do you think? Who were "Edge" and "Near Edge" at that time?
