Without having taken a step in any direction, immediately after birth, he received gold worth twenty kotis, and having renounced in the Blessed One's teachings, he abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of an Arhat. The Blessed One said: "Monks, this 'Rice-Ear Born of Twenty Kotis' has transformed the acquisition of deeds and circumstances, drawing near like a light, and will experience the result of not being devoured by demons, due to the deeds he has done and accumulated. Who else will individually experience the deeds done and accumulated by this 'Rice-Ear Born'? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor will they ripen in the realm of water, nor will they ripen in the realm of fire, nor will they ripen in the realm of wind. Rather, the virtuous and non-virtuous deeds done and accumulated will ripen in the aggregates, realms, and sources that are grasped. Deeds, even after hundreds of eons, will not be lost; when the conditions and time are right, they will transform into fruits for sentient beings. Monks, in the past, ninety-one eons ago, there appeared in the world a perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, a tamer of beings, unsurpassed, a teacher of gods and humans, a Buddha Bhagavan, named Vipashyin. Surrounded by sixty-two thousand monks, he traveled from place to place. He went to a royal palace called 'Good Friend'. In the royal palace of 'Good Friend', there lived a great multitude of joyful people. They heard that the perfectly enlightened Buddha Vipashyin, surrounded by sixty-two thousand monks, was traveling from place to place and had come here. Having heard this, they all gathered together and went to where the perfectly enlightened Buddha Vipashyin was. Having arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Vipashyin and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the perfectly enlightened Buddha Vipashyin taught the joyful people with words in accordance with the Dharma, guiding them truthfully.

He caused them to enter, he praised them completely, he made them completely rejoice, and with various Dharma-related words, he fully revealed, caused them to fully grasp, fully praised, and after making them fully rejoice, he remained silent. Then, a great multitude of joyful people rose from their seats, bared one shoulder, and bowed with folded palms towards the place where the perfectly complete Buddha Shakyamuni was. They addressed the perfectly complete Buddha Shakyamuni, saying: "Venerable One, together with the Sangha of monks, we offer robes, Dharma robes, alms, bedding, medicine for sickness, and utensils for three months. Please grant us permission." The perfectly complete Buddha Shakyamuni remained silent to the great multitude of joyful people, which meant permission. Then, the great multitude of joyful people, knowing that the perfectly complete Buddha Shakyamuni's silence meant permission, rejoiced at the words of the Venerable One, rejoiced and praised, bowed their heads to the feet of the Venerable One, rose from their seats, and departed. They gathered in the assembly hall and began to discuss: "Wise ones, how should we offer food to the Venerable One? Should we offer it together, or should each of us offer it individually?" Some of them said: "If we gather every day to offer food, our field work will be interrupted. Wise ones, if you wish, let us offer food in turn." So they began to prepare a public feast in turn, and each added their own share according to their means. Then, among the joyful people, there was a poor Brahmin boy who went to his mother and said: "The joyful people of the village have decided to offer food to the Venerable One in turn. But my means are meager, how shall I offer food?" The mother said: "Child, if that is the case, you should work a little harder for the last two days, and perhaps you can find some remaining funds from the gathering." So he spent the last two days
