Dwelling in the charnel ground of the Ila garden, constantly diligent, for the dharmas that accord with the path to enlightenment, he abides as a meditator who strives after yoga. Then, the venerable Grosa Twenty Hundred Thousand went alone to a secluded place, and when he was truly settled within, the thought arose in his mind: How many of the Blessed One's hearers dwell diligently? Among them, am I the most excellent? However, I have not grasped, and my mind has not been liberated from the defilements. My relatives have great possessions, so I might as well stay at home, enjoy desires, give alms, and accumulate merit. Then, the Blessed One, knowing the thoughts of the venerable Grosa Twenty Hundred Thousand, said to a certain monk: Monk, come here! Go to where Grosa Twenty Hundred Thousand is, and when you arrive, say to Grosa Twenty Hundred Thousand: Grosa Twenty Hundred Thousand, the Teacher is calling you. Venerable one, as you say. Having heard from the Blessed One, that monk went to where the venerable Grosa Twenty Hundred Thousand was, and when he arrived, he said to the venerable Grosa Twenty Hundred Thousand: Venerable Grosa, the Teacher is calling you. Venerable one, as you say. Having heard from that monk, the venerable Grosa Twenty Hundred Thousand went to where the Blessed One was, and when he arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the Blessed One said to the venerable Grosa Twenty Hundred Thousand: Grosa, when you went alone to a secluded place, and when you were truly settled within, did such a thought arise in your mind: How many of the Blessed One's hearers dwell diligently? Among them, am I the most excellent? However, I have not grasped, and my mind has not been liberated from the defilements. My relatives have great possessions, so I might as well stay at home,

Enjoying desirable things and giving alms, did the thought arise, 'I should do virtuous deeds'? Then, the venerable Grozhin Kye thought to himself, 'The Blessed One knows my mind with his holy mind.' Feeling fear and dread, with his hair standing on end, he said to the Blessed One, 'Venerable one, it is so.' Therefore, Grozhin Kye, I will ask you, answer as you can bear it. Grozhin Kye, what do you think? When you were a householder in the past, were you skilled in the sound of the strings of the lute? Venerable one, when I was a householder in the past, I was not skilled in the sound of the strings of the lute. Grozhin Kye, what do you think? When the strings of the lute are too tight, is the sound of the lute pleasant? Is the sound pleasing? Is the sound harmonious? Is it usable? Venerable one, no. Then, when the strings of the lute are too loose, is the sound of the lute pleasant? Is the sound pleasing? Is the sound harmonious? Is it usable? Venerable one, no. When the strings of the lute are neither too tight nor too loose, and the strings are properly tuned, is the sound of the lute pleasant? Is the sound pleasing? Is the sound harmonious? Is it usable? Venerable one, it is so. Grozhin Kye, likewise, too much effort leads to agitation, and too little leads to discouragement. Grozhin Kye, therefore, you should understand moderation, and you should not be arrogant because of it, and you should also be careful in this. At that time, you should also take up the signs. Grozhin Kye, if you abide in this state, before long, the outflows will be exhausted, and by your own direct knowledge, you will realize and perfect the Dharma of seeing the outflow-free, liberated mind and liberated wisdom in this very life, and you will proclaim, 'Birth is exhausted, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more after this.' Then, the venerable Grozhin Kye, twenty monks, the Blessed One
