Then, the son of Pana Dhrujina, every day cooked and mixed five hundred portions of food from vessels. From that, the son of the monk Maudgalyayana took. The Blessed One, having heard that someone had begun to praise him, a desire arose in his mind to see him. The Blessed One, knowing his thought with his wisdom, then said, "Great King, that sentient being is endowed with great merit, you will exhaust your merit, do not speak to him. Even so, Great King, enjoy the remainder of the bowl." He replied, "Venerable one, I am a king of the Kshatriya caste, having received empowerment from the crown of my head. In the past, I have never tasted the remainder of anyone's bowl, but the Blessed One is my father according to the Dharma. If the Blessed One allows, I will enjoy it." So he began to enjoy it. The Blessed One said, "Great King, have you ever enjoyed such delicious food and drink before?" The King replied, "Venerable one, I was born into the lineage of kings, became great in the lineage of kings, and became a king, but I have never tasted such delicious food and drink before." The Blessed One said, "Great King, that sentient being with great merit is enjoying such and such food and drink." Those wise ones sent word, "The king will not pass away, but the young man will depart." They were afraid, thinking, "Even if the young man is fierce, coming a few times will cause harm." So they sent word again, "The king will not pass away, nor will the young man depart. Even so, you should build a dam like the Ganges flowing in the opposite direction of its course." Having heard these words, the people of the city residing in Campa gathered together and said, "Those wise ones surely intend for the king to punish us, so they send such letters." So they informed the ministers of this matter. The ministers pondered and reported truthfully, "Those wise ones speak the truth, the king and the young man will not pass away, and there is no need to build a dam on the Ganges. But they wish to see the son of the boatman." So they sent a messenger. The messenger also reported truthfully. Then, they gathered together and went to the householder boatman, saying, "Householder, the gods wish to see the twenty kotis of rice-grain-born, so the ministers have truthfully informed me, and the messenger has said the same thing, let this go." He said, "Those wise ones, even if my share of the dam is built with golden balls, I will not let the man go." They said, "Householder, even if that is so, please have compassion for the beings of the future." He said, "Those wise ones, if that is so, make a vow, if your children are also sent together like the rice-grain-born, I will let the man go." They said, "Householder, so be it. Then, those wise ones, please send them." The householder boatman went to the place where the twenty kotis of rice-grain-born were, and having arrived, said to the twenty kotis of rice-grain-born, "Son, these townspeople say this."
