A Bhikṣu who, for the sake of dividing the united Saṃgha, acts obstructively and initiates disputes that lead to discord, having properly taken up and firmly grasped them, should not follow those who speak discordantly. To the Bhikṣus, say this: "Venerable ones, whether you are good or bad, do not say anything to this Bhikṣu. Why is that? Venerable ones, this Bhikṣu is a speaker of the Dharma, a speaker of the Vinaya. This Bhikṣu correctly initiates and firmly grasps the Dharma and Vinaya, and subsequently explains them. This Bhikṣu speaks intentionally, not unintentionally. Do not say: 'What this Bhikṣu likes and tolerates, we also like and tolerate.' Why is that? Venerable ones, this Bhikṣu is not a speaker of the Dharma, nor a speaker of the Vinaya. Venerable ones, this Bhikṣu is a speaker of what is not Dharma, a speaker of what is not Vinaya. This Bhikṣu incorrectly initiates and firmly grasps what is not Dharma and what is not Vinaya, and subsequently explains them. This Bhikṣu speaks unintentionally, not intentionally. Do not say: 'What this Bhikṣu likes and tolerates, we also like and tolerate.' Venerable ones, do not desire to divide the Saṃgha. Venerable ones, desire the unity of the Saṃgha. Venerable ones, be in harmony with the Saṃgha. The Saṃgha is united and not divided, everyone rejoices and does not quarrel, with one opinion, one utterance, and like water and milk mixed together. If you illuminate the Teacher's doctrine, you will abide touching happiness. Venerable ones, for those who follow the division of the Saṃgha and speak discordantly, admonish them with entreaty and the four Karmas. Venerable ones, if anyone tolerates being admonished with entreaty and the four Karmas to Kokālika, Khaṇḍadra, Katimora Katishya, and Ocean-given, do not say anything. If anyone does not tolerate it, speak up. This is the first Karma statement. Repeat it in the same way for the second and third time. If the Saṃgha tolerates and allows it, the Saṃgha will treat Kokālika and Khaṇḍadra

Zha-bya and, Kati Mor Kati-shya and, Gyatso Jin (རྒྱ་མཚོས་བྱིན་) and others were given exhortations and the four karmas, and they accepted it as it was without saying anything. The monks, having heard from the Blessed One, "Venerable ones, please act according to the teachings," gave exhortations and the four karmas to Koka Lika and, Khanda Dra-bya and, Kati Mor Kati-shya and, Gyatso Jin (རྒྱ་མཚོས་བྱིན་) and others. When those monks gave exhortations and the four karmas to Koka Lika and, Khanda Dra-bya and, Kati Mor Kati-shya and, Gyatso Jin (རྒྱ་མཚོས་བྱིན་) and others, even though they were exhorted and given the four karmas by the monks, they still insisted on that basis, were extremely attached, and made false distinctions, saying, "This is the only truth, the others are false." At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, "Venerable One, we have given exhortations and the four karmas to Koka Lika and, Khanda Dra-bya and, Kati Mor Kati-shya and, Gyatso Jin (རྒྱ་མཚོས་བྱིན་), but even though we have exhorted them, they still insist on that basis, are extremely attached, and make false distinctions, saying, 'This is the only truth, the others are false.'" Then, the Blessed One said to the monks, "Monks, Devadatta is able to divide the harmony of my Sangha of hearers and destroy the wheel of Dharma, because these four monks who help him, speak discordantly, and follow him are Koka Lika and, Khanda Dra-bya and, Kati Mor Kati-shya and, Gyatso Jin (རྒྱ་མཚོས་བྱིན་) and others. Devadatta declared to me: 'The Shramana Gautama said that Devadatta is able to divide the harmony of my Sangha of hearers and destroy the wheel of Dharma, because these four monks who help him, speak discordantly, and follow him are Koka Lika and, Khanda Dra-bya and, Kati Mor Kati-shya and, Gyatso Jin (རྒྱ་མཚོས་བྱིན་) and others.'

He can break up the Sangha and break the Wheel of Dharma. Thus, it was prophesied that these four monks, who are friends of Devadatta and follow his discordant words, are Kokalika, Khandadeva, Katimorakatishya, and Samudradatta. Malakoba should act harshly in order to divide the Sangha. When he was gathering with five hundred monks in the monastery and eating, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Monks, what do you think? Why does the Tathagata allow three kinds of eating, but forbid eating in groups? This is because he considered two situations: one is to rely on a flourishing family; the other is to destroy the power of those who crave evil. Those who crave evil rely only on the Sangha, act only for the Sangha, they do not understand the Sangha, but pretend to be great, and argue with the Sangha endlessly. When the venerable Mahakashyapa, with his ten powers of superknowledge, prophesied the path of superknowledge for Devadatta, the monks said to him: Venerable, why did you prophesy the path of superknowledge for Devadatta? He said: Venerable ones, I did not know that he craved evil. If I had known, I would not have given him even the prophecy of the mere word "superknowledge," let alone the path of superknowledge. Later, the monks persuaded Devadatta, saying: Devadatta, all your glory and merit depend on the venerable Mahakashyapa, why don't you go to him? They thought: If we persuade him, he will go to Mahakashyapa, and Mahakashyapa will restore him to his original state. When they persuaded him in this way, he said: What has he done to me? I practice diligently, not sleeping in the first or last part of the night, but diligently practicing yoga, relying on the first dhyana to achieve superknowledge, isn't that so? As soon as he said these words, he fell from superknowledge because of his misconduct.
