and became followers of those who spoke against it, they would say to the monks: "Venerable ones, whether you are good or bad, do not say anything about this monk. Why is that? Venerable ones, this monk is a speaker of the Dharma, a speaker of the Vinaya. This monk has correctly taken up and completely grasped the Dharma and the Vinaya, and subsequently establishes names. This monk speaks knowingly, not unknowingly. Whatever this monk tolerates and desires, we also desire and tolerate." If many monks admonished these people, even if they admonished them, they would still firmly adhere to and extremely grasp that very basis, and manifestly cling to it, subsequently establishing names and saying: "This alone is true, the others are false." If the time of the Sangha has come and it is tolerant, then let the Sangha permit it. The Sangha would say to Kokalika, Khandadhara, Katimorakatidishya, and Samudradatta: "Kokalika, Khandadhara, Katimorakatidiniya, and Samudradatta, you knowingly act rudely in order to separate the harmony of the Sangha. If you are separating, do not follow those who correctly take up and completely grasp the dispute and abide by it, and speak against it." They would say to the monks: "Venerable ones, whether you are good or bad, do not say anything about this monk. Why is that? Venerable ones, this monk is a speaker of the Dharma, a speaker of the Vinaya. This monk has correctly taken up and completely grasped the Dharma and the Vinaya, and subsequently establishes names. This monk speaks knowingly, not unknowingly. Do not say that whatever this monk desires and tolerates, we also desire and tolerate." Why is that? Venerable ones, this monk is not a speaker of the Dharma, not a speaker of the Vinaya. Venerable ones, this monk is a speaker of what is not Dharma, a speaker of what is not Vinaya.

Because it is not speaking untruthfully. Venerable ones, do not like or tolerate what this monk likes and tolerates. Venerable ones, do not desire to divide the Sangha; venerable ones, desire the Sangha to be in harmony. Venerable ones, abandon those who follow the division of the Sangha and speak discordantly. Venerable ones, be in harmony with the Sangha. Do not divide the Sangha, do not quarrel, but be like water and milk mixed together, becoming one in intention and expression. If you clarify the Teacher's doctrine, you will abide in happiness. After such exhortation, venerable ones, abandon those who follow the division of the Sangha and speak discordantly, and exhort them with four karmas. This is the request. The karma should be performed as follows: Venerable members of the Sangha, please listen. If Kokalika, Khandadravya, Katimorakatishya, and Samudradatta, knowingly and stubbornly try to divide the harmonious Sangha, follow those who speak discordantly, and then say to the monks: Venerable ones, whether good or bad, do not say anything about this monk. Why? Because this monk speaks truthfully, not untruthfully. This monk is a speaker of the Dharma, a holder of the Vinaya. This monk correctly accepts, fully grasps, and subsequently applies terminology to the Dharma and Vinaya. This monk speaks truthfully, not untruthfully. We like and tolerate what this monk likes and tolerates. If many monks exhort these people, even if they are exhorted, they stubbornly adhere to their own position, clinging to the belief that only they are true and others are false, and subsequently apply terminology. Therefore, the Sangha should say to Kokalika, Khandadravya, Katimorakatishya, and Samudradatta: Kokalika, Khandadravya, Katimorakatishya, and Samudradatta, you knowingly
