Monks, I claim to be completely pure in discipline, not afflicted. The Shravakas do not need to think of protecting me through discipline, nor do I desire the Shravakas to protect me through discipline. Monks, I claim to be completely pure in livelihood, my livelihood is completely pure, not afflicted. The Shravakas do not need to think of protecting me through livelihood, nor do I desire the Shravakas to protect me through livelihood. Monks, I claim to be completely pure in wisdom and vision, my wisdom and vision are completely pure, not afflicted. The Shravakas do not need to think of protecting me through wisdom and vision, nor do I desire the Shravakas to protect me through wisdom and vision. Monks, I claim to be endowed with prophecy, my prophecy is perfect, not afflicted. The Shravakas do not need to think of protecting me through the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, nor do I desire the Shravakas to protect me through the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya. Monks, I admonish you again and again, instruct you again and again, and am eloquent, but I will not be angry with you, just as a potter treats baked pottery, only keeping what is suitable, so please tolerate my words. Then, Devadatta said to Kokalika and, Khandadravya and, Katimora Katishya and, Samudradatta: Kokalika and, Khandadravya and, Katimora Katishya and, Samudradatta are finished. This Shramana Gautama

While (the Sangha) exists, the harmony of the Sravaka Sangha should be divided, and the wheel of Dharma should be divided. Therefore, even if we die, the Blessed One Gautama is so powerful and so mighty, but Devadatta, Kokalika, Khandadra, Kati Mora Katyashya, and Samudradatta have divided the harmony of the Sravaka Sangha, and have divided the wheel of Dharma. Such fame and praise, and beautiful verses, will be widely spread. They said: Devadatta, we cannot divide the harmonious Sangha of the Blessed One's Sravaka disciples, nor can we divide the wheel of Dharma. Why? Because the venerable Devadatta is a Sravaka disciple of the Blessed One, with great supernatural powers and great strength, possessing the divine eye and the knowledge of others' minds. They can see from afar, and even if they are near, they are invisible. They know the mind with the mind, and understand the intention with the intention. They will know our every move. He said: Kokalika, you have a way. We should go to the elder monks, make the elders happy, and we will provide all the necessities to the elders, so that they will not have to work hard. We should also use bowls, robes, bowl stands, water filters, belts, needle cases, teaching reading, teaching recitation, yoga, and mindfulness to approach and serve the newly ordained monks. Venerable Devadatta, this method is true. Devadatta is working hard to divide the harmony of the Sangha. Then, the Blessed One told the monks: Monks, you should admonish and warn Devadatta, and others like him. You should admonish in this way: Devadatta, do not strive to divide the harmony of the Sangha. Do not initiate and persist in disputes that lead to division. Devadatta, you should be in harmony with the Sangha.

Do it! The Sangha is in harmony and not divided, joyful everywhere, without arguing, the highest view is consistent, like water and milk mixed together. If you can promote the teachings of the Teacher, you will be able to abide in happiness, so admonish! Those monks admonished Devadatta, and even though they admonished him in this way, he still stubbornly held his own views, clinging to the idea that "only this is true, and all others are false," and naming it accordingly. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One: "Venerable One, we admonish Devadatta, and even though we admonish him in this way, he still stubbornly holds his own views, clinging to the idea that 'only this is true, and all others are false,' and naming it accordingly." The Blessed One instructed: "Monks, you should admonish Devadatta and anyone else like him with supplication and four karmas. The admonition should also be done in this way: arrange the place, strike the ghanta, and use the words of inquiry to truly admonish the monks. All the Sangha should gather in harmony, one monk should make the supplication, and then the karma should be performed. Venerable ones of the Sangha, please listen to me. If Devadatta cunningly stirs up disputes in order to divide the harmony of the Sangha, and has already established and insisted on this dispute, then, if many monks admonish him, even though they admonish him in this way, he still stubbornly holds his own views, clinging to the idea that 'only this is true, and all others are false,' and naming it accordingly, then, if the time is right for the Sangha and it is permissible, then please let the Sangha permit it. Sangha, Devadatta, do not cunningly stir up disputes in order to divide the harmony of the Sangha! Do not establish and insist on this dispute that will cause division! Devadatta, you should be in harmony with the Sangha! The Sangha is in harmony and not divided, joyful everywhere, without arguing, the highest view is consistent, like water and milk mixed together. If you can promote the teachings of the Teacher, you will be able to abide in happiness." In this way, Devadatta is admonished with supplication and four karmas.
