Once, the Bodhisattva resided in an impermanent aggregate body, born among the sea turtles in the great ocean, and became their leader. At that time, five hundred merchants built a large ship and entered the great ocean. After that, they took various treasures, and on their way back, the large ship was pierced by the attacks of aquatic creatures. At that time, the turtle heard the great clamor, emerged from the great ocean, and went to them, saying: "Wise ones, abandon your fear, ride on my back, and I will save you." After that, the merchants, as if revived from death, all rode on the turtle's back. The turtle carried them towards the seashore, and even though it was pressed tightly by the cargo, it remained steadfast in its diligence and did not become lazy. It was exhausted, but it rescued them well, and then stretched its neck and fell asleep. Not long after, there was a nest of Kitaka insects, and one of the Kitaka insects crawled past, smelled the scent, and went to it. After that, it saw the large body sleeping, and quickly ran back to the nest of Kitaka insects, and with their respective signals, informed the Kitaka insects, and then drove eighty thousand Kitaka insects to the turtle. After that, it began to eat the body that was sleeping as if dead, without consciousness. When it ate the large pieces of meat, it was exhausted from fatigue and overwhelmed by heavy sleep. When it was easy to eat the meat in the vital areas, it woke up and saw all the Kitaka insects covering its body, and it thought: "If I move or turn over, I will surely kill these insects who cannot eat. Rather than harming other beings, it is better to give up my life." So, as its vital areas were pierced and its joints were separated, it began to make a vow: "Just as I have satisfied these eighty thousand Kitaka insects with flesh and blood, may I also satisfy them with the taste of the Dharma when I attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment in the future." Monks, what do you think?

At that time, the lord of the lineage in that era was myself. The guide for those Kita worms was the monk Kaundinya himself. Relying on that, the eighty thousand Kita worms that were satisfied with flesh and blood were these eighty thousand gods. Even then, I satisfied them with my own blood. Now, too, I satisfy them with the taste of the sacred Dharma. Monks, therefore, from "the ripening of the actions of those who are completely dark" to "monks, you should train in such a way." When the Blessed One satisfied the five groups of monks with the taste of the sacred Dharma, liberated them from the wilderness of samsara, and placed them in the ultimate accomplishment and the bliss of nirvana, the monks became doubtful. To dispel all doubts, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One. Venerable One, the Blessed One satisfied the five groups of monks with the taste of the sacred Dharma, liberated them from the wilderness of samsara, and placed them in the ultimate accomplishment and the bliss of nirvana, please look upon this. The Blessed One said: Monks, like this, now I am free from desire, free from hatred, free from delusion, and completely liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and strife, having become all-knowing and all-seeing, having attained mastery over all knowledge and knowable things, thereby satisfying the five groups of monks with the taste of the sacred Dharma, liberating them from the wilderness of samsara, and placing them in the ultimate accomplishment and the bliss of nirvana, what is so amazing about that? In the past, when I was still full of desire, full of hatred, full of delusion, and not completely liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and strife, listen to how I satisfied them with my own blood and placed them on the basis of the five ascetic practices. Monks, in the past...

In the past, in the city of Varanasi, a king named Vajrabahu (Diamond Arm), from the beginning of 'wealth' to 'being filled with people and the populace, being allowed to rule the kingdom.' That king was devout, possessed virtuous roots, engaged in benefiting himself and others, was a great lord of compassion, desired the Dharma, loved beings, gave everything, completely relinquished everything, completely relinquished without attachment, and abided in great generosity. He was especially skilled in loving-kindness, so he entered into the samadhi of loving-kindness three times a day. When he entered the samadhi of loving-kindness, the beggars who came became impoverished, so he admonished the ministers: 'Wise ones, build houses of charity at the four gates of the city of Varanasi, and give to those mendicants, Brahmins, the destitute, the poor, and the beggars on the road who seek whatever they desire.' According to the divine command, give food, drink, clothing, lodging, sesame, gold, jewels, pearls, lapis lazuli, coral, ruby, salai, silver, the essence of gems, lapis lazuli, padmaraga (ruby lotus), and other abundant wealth, piled up like mountains, in order to satisfy the beggars. At another time, the son of King Vaishravana sent five radiant yakshas from the king's willow palace. Wandering around, they arrived in Varanasi and saw cowherds, shepherds, grass cutters, wood cutters, people who lived by the road, and people who lived by getting lost, and said: 'Wise ones, are you not afraid of us? Wise ones, why are you not afraid? Our king has a heart of loving-kindness and compassion, and for the benefit of sentient beings, he enters into the samadhi of loving-kindness three times a day.' Then, they manifested as Brahmins, inspected the charity houses at the four gates of the city of Varanasi, and, learning that King Vajrabahu had arisen from loving-kindness, went to the king's residence in a gentle manner.
