When those who had entered into the practice of contemplating loving-kindness that followed all sentient beings, the yakshas who robbed of splendor began to wander near Varanasi (Bārāṇasī), but they could not enter. Because they could not enter, they did not find an opportunity. Because they did not find an opportunity, they saw cowherds, shepherds, wood gatherers, tree fellers, those who lived by the road, and people who lived by getting lost, and asked: Wise ones, are you not afraid of us? They replied: We are not afraid. Why? Because we are mindful of the thought of our king, the Power of Loving-Kindness. What does the Power of Loving-Kindness contemplate? It is the loving-kindness that follows all sentient beings. They thought: Because of this reason, we cannot find an opportunity now. So they wandered in and out of the gates of Varanasi, thinking, 'When will we see the King of the Power of Loving-Kindness?' After some time, the King of the Power of Loving-Kindness went out to a pleasure garden, and then they manifested themselves as brahmins, and with peaceful conduct, they approached the king and, after saying auspicious words and wishing him long life, said: 'O god, we are hungry, please help us with alms.' The king summoned the ministers and instructed them: 'Wise ones, satisfy these brahmins with food.' They said: 'O god, we desire flesh and blood.' The king said to the ministers: 'Wise ones, if there is no flesh and blood available, give them flesh and blood that is obtained by buying it from the market.' 'O god, we desire the flesh and blood of freshly slaughtered animals, please help us with the flesh and blood of freshly slaughtered animals.' The king thought: 'Without harming other sentient beings, how can one obtain freshly slaughtered flesh and blood? In any case, I should give my own blood to these people.' Then he summoned the physicians and said: 'Wise ones, cut off all the veins in my limbs and satisfy the beggars.' The physicians said: 'O god, we cannot strike the body of a god with a sword for the sake of ordinary people.' The Bodhisattva, with respect to the places of crafts and the places of activities,

Because he was wise, he surely cut off his own five limbs with a weapon. Then, having satisfied them with his own blood, he taught them the Dharma in such a way that all the Yakshas who heard it were established on the basis of the five ascetic practices. Monks, what do you think? Who was the king of loving-kindness at that time? It was I myself. Who were the five Yakshas who stole the radiance? They were these five monks. Even then, I satisfied them with my own blood and established them on the basis of the five ascetic practices. Now, I satisfy them with the taste of the sacred Dharma, lead them out of the wilderness of samsara, and establish them in the ultimate attainment and the bliss of Nirvana. When the Blessed One practiced austerities for six years and attained the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, he went to Varanasi and turned the wheel of Dharma, subduing the five monks, the near five monks, and the sixty good assemblies, causing the community of monks to increase. At that time, the monks became doubtful and, in order to dispel all doubts, asked the Blessed Buddha: "Venerable Blessed One, what kind of deeds did you perform that, as a result of those deeds, the Blessed One practiced austerities for six years?" The Blessed One replied: "Monks, the Tathagata himself, in his past lives, performed and accumulated deeds, and obtained gatherings, etc., up to the point where they become fruits for sentient beings, as previously stated. Monks, in the past, in the town of Veibhitinga, there was prosperity, etc., up to the point where there were white-clad people and many people. Monks, in the town of Veibhitinga, there was a banyan tree like a great Brahmin Sala tree, named Nyagrodha, which was rich, had much wealth, and great enjoyment. Together with the assembly of Veibhitinga, the land, trees, and water, King Krijik gave it to the Brahmins as a gift, and they enjoyed it there. Monks, the disciple of the Brahmin Nyagrodha, who was like a great Sala tree, was a Brahmin boy named Lama, who possessed the lineage of his father and mother.
