He took off the ring and placed it at the base of the alms bowl, and the alms bowl stood there without moving. Seeing this, he began to make a prayer: 'Just as this alms bowl stands here without moving, may this root of virtue cause whatever Dharma I have in my being to remain unmoving.' Because he was previously skilled in letters and words and was able to teach the Dharma properly, he (the Pratyekabuddha) said to him: 'When you were a householder, you were skilled in letters and words and were able to teach the Dharma properly. Now that you have realized enlightenment, why don't you teach the Dharma?' He said: 'I do not teach the Dharma.' 'Then who teaches?' 'The Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly enlightened Buddhas, those Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are skilled in letters and words and teach the Dharma properly.' He prayed: 'May I become the brother and attendant of those Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, who are skilled in letters and words and teach the Dharma properly.' That Pratyekabuddha tonsured him and said: 'You will die in seven days, you must remember this.' After seven days, he did not realize anything, and at the time of his death, he prayed: 'By this root of virtue, may I be ordained in the teachings of the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, and become one who is learned, holds what he has heard, and accumulates what he has heard.' Monks, what do you think? The young prince, who was the younger brother of the Pratyekabuddha, is none other than the monk Ananda. At that time, he served his Pratyekabuddha brother and made prayers, and due to the ripening of that karma, he became the brother of the Blessed One and became the attendant of those who are learned, hold what they have heard, and accumulate what they have heard. The monks became doubtful, and in order to dispel all doubts, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: 'Venerable Ananda, what karma did he do, that due to the ripening of that karma, the Blessed One praised him as the foremost among those who are learned, hold what they have heard, and accumulate what they have heard?' The Blessed One said: 'Monks, the karma that the monk Ananda did, accumulated, and gathered is...'

From "knowing" to "becoming the fruit for sentient beings," as before. Monks, in the past, in this very Fortunate Aeon, when the lifespan of beings reached twenty thousand years, from "the perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct," to "the Buddha, the Bhagavan Light Protector, appeared in the world." He resided near the city of Varanasi, in the Deer Park spoken of by sages. If one were to ordain in his teaching, he would not gain even a little merit there. Whoever ordains him will be prophesied by the perfectly enlightened Buddha, the Bhagavan Light Protector, as the foremost among those who have heard much, retained what they have heard, and accumulated what they have heard. Therefore, at the time of his death, he made a prayer: If I practice celibacy for as long as I live towards the perfectly enlightened Buddha, the Bhagavan, the unsurpassed field of merit, Light Protector, but do not gain even a little merit, then by whatever root of virtue there is, may I be prophesied by the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light Protector as the Brahmin boy, the teacher. Whatever Brahmin boy, when the lifespan of beings reaches one hundred years, he will be prophesied as the Tathagata, Arhat, perfectly enlightened Buddha, Shakyamuni. I will ordain in his teaching, abandon all afflictions, and realize Arhatship. Just as my teacher, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, the Bhagavan Light Protector, prophesied me as the foremost among those who have heard much, retained what they have heard, and accumulated what they have heard, so too may I be prophesied by the king of the Shakyas, also the king, the Bhagavan Shakyamuni, as the foremost among those who have heard much, retained what they have heard, and accumulated what they have heard. He made this prayer. By the power of that prayer, now I am prophesied as the foremost among those who have heard much, retained what they have heard, and accumulated what they have heard. Monks, therefore, from "for one action is dark" to "Monks, you should train in such a way." The Kaundinya Section.
