I, the Blessed One, liberated the five monks from the wilderness monastery of samsara, and distributed the treasures of roots, powers, and branches of enlightenment, satisfying them with the taste of the supreme Dharma. At that time, the monks arose with doubts, and in order to dispel all doubts, they asked the Blessed One Buddha: Venerable Blessed One, please behold, you liberated the five monks from the wilderness monastery of samsara and satisfied them with the taste of the supreme Dharma. The Blessed One said: Monks, just as now I am free from attachment, free from hatred, free from delusion, and completely liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and turmoil, having become all-knowing, all-seeing, and having attained mastery over all wisdom and knowledge, what is so amazing about liberating the five monks from the wilderness monastery of samsara and satisfying them with the taste of the supreme Dharma? In the past, I was still with attachment, with hatred, with delusion, and not completely liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and turmoil. When I was a caravan leader, those five people faced the suffering and fear of losing their lives due to lack of water on the road to the wilderness monastery. They prayed to the gods for truth, and then the Great自在天 (Maheśvara) poured down a large amount of water to satisfy them. Listen to this. Monks, in the past there was a caravan leader named Save All, who did business with five hundred merchants, entering a small river on the road to the wilderness monastery, gradually reaching a monastery called Piercing. All the water of those merchants was exhausted there, and although they lacked water, they still tried to dig. About five merchants did not find water and became very frustrated. The caravan leader Save All saw their appearance and, with compassion arising in his heart, looked up to the sky and began to pray to the gods: Peaceful God, Water God, Evil Body God, All-pervading God, and other knowledgeable deities, please listen! I treat all sentient beings equally.

By the truth and true words of thinking, whatever truth and true words there are, may the great powerful god cause rain to fall! By the power of the Bodhisattva, the abode of the great powerful god was shaken, and the consciousness of Indra, the lord of the gods, saw what was happening below. He thought: Who has shaken the abode of the great powerful god? When he saw that it was the power of the Bodhisattva, he caused such rain of the great powerful god to fall, satisfying those merchants and rescuing them from the wilderness. What do you think, monks? At that time, the protector of all the caravan leaders was none other than myself! Those five merchants who were extremely thirsty due to lack of water were none other than these five monks. At that time, I also satisfied them with water and rescued them from the wilderness. Now, I am also satisfying them with the taste of the excellent Dharma and rescuing them from the wilderness of samsara. When the Blessed One rescued the five monks from the wilderness of samsara and gave them the distribution of the jewels of roots, powers, and branches of enlightenment, behold the distribution of those great ones.

Listen to this. Bhikshus, in the past there was a captain named Norgyi Shingta (Treasure Chariot). He and five merchants went together into the great ocean, and they and the captain spoke friendly words to each other, becoming close. When they finally reached the seashore and each prepared their own boats to enter, they said to the captain Norgyi Shingta: Captain, we would not be happy if we were separated from you. He said: If that is so, come here and abandon the boats. When they entered there, the wind rose and they became afraid. Norgyi Shingta said: Wise ones, do not be afraid! When the boat is destroyed, grab my neck, and I will save you. Bodhisattvas are skilled in crafts and works, and he put things suitable for great jewels under his armpits, and when the boat was destroyed, they all grabbed the captain's neck. He made their bodies weary, leaving only a little bit of life, and reached the seashore. When they reached the land and released him, he stopped breathing and died. They pulled him out of the water onto the land, and when they saw things suitable for great jewels under his armpits, they took those things and left. Bhikshus, what do you think? The captain Norgyi Shingta at that time was myself. Those merchants were these five bhikshus. At that time, I also rescued them from the great ocean and distributed the jewels. Now I have also rescued them from the wilderness of samsara and distributed the jewels of faculties, Powers, and limbs of enlightenment. Vinaya Basis, Volume Ninety-three. Also, when the venerable Ajnata-Kaundinya was in an old state, he sat like an umbrella for the assembly. The monks became doubtful and asked the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who cuts off all doubts: Venerable, what deed did the venerable Ajnata-Kaundinya do, that the ripening of that deed made him like an umbrella for the assembly?
