Then he said again, "Great ascetic, please forgive me! Great king, forgive me! Who cut it?" Then, the Bodhisattva placed the places where the limbs and twigs were cut as they were, and in order to pray for the truth, he said in verse: "King, you cut my body, even if it is cut very finely, if I do not have such intense hatred, may my body be restored as before." He prayed with truthful words, and his body was restored to its original state. Then, the king widened his eyes in amazement and said in verse, "How wonderful! He abides so well in the Dharma. How wonderful! He has accomplished such asceticism. When the body is cut, you have no displeasure towards him." The queen, ministers, townspeople, and villagers who were born from the king's strife, bowed their heads to the feet of that ascetic. Monks, what do you think? The ascetic who spoke of patience at that time was myself. The one who was born from the king's strife was the monk Kaundinya himself. I generated loving-kindness towards him and made a prayer: "With this root of virtue, may I tame him again and again, and cut off his afflictions." By the power of that prayer, even now, the Tathagata preaches the Dharma to him and says so again and again. Monks, therefore, now the karma is entirely black, and its ripening is also entirely black, until monks, you should learn in this way. When the Blessed One completely gathered eighty thousand gods with the taste of Dharma and elaborated on the truths, the monks became doubtful. In order to cut off all doubts, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, "Venerable One, the Blessed One has completely gathered eighty thousand gods with the taste of Dharma and elaborated on the truths, please look upon us." The Blessed One said, "Monks, not only is it like this now, but in the past, when I turned these people into eighty thousand merchants, I completely gathered them with wealth and elaborated on the basis of the five precepts, listen to it. Monks, in the past there was a leader of merchants.

Two things happened: one was named "Saving All" and the other "Good Accomplishment," each having a retinue of forty thousand merchants. Among them, Good Accomplishment was very happy to renounce and practice, so he renounced among the hermits. He single-mindedly persevered in practice, and without a Khenpo or Acharya, he directly realized enlightenment himself. Those merchants, not seeing their leader, began to search for each other. When they could not find him in any way, they went to the merchant leader Saving All and said: "Merchant leader, merchant leader, that merchant leader has not looked after us, and we cannot find him even when we search. What should we do?" He said: "Do not be noisy, be quiet, and search for that merchant leader." Then, the merchant leader Saving All, surrounded by eighty thousand merchants, began to search for the merchant leader Good Accomplishment in gardens, residences, and ascetic forests. When Good Accomplishment saw them, he asked: "Why have you abandoned the merchants and renounced?" Those great beings teach the Dharma with their bodies, not with words. Therefore, the merchant leader and his retinue developed faith through miracles such as burning, shining, raining, and lightning. He gathered those eighty thousand merchants with wealth and said: "Strive for this! If you strive for this, you will surely bear fruit." They did various things for him. Monks, what do you think? The merchant leader Saving All at that time was none other than myself. Those eighty thousand merchants were none other than these eighty thousand gods. At that time, I also approached them with wealth and established them on the foundation of the five vows. Now, I also gather them with the taste of the Dharma and establish them in the truth. Monks, therefore, the ripening of completely black deeds is completely black, and the ripening of completely white deeds is completely white. The ripening of guides is that of guides, from "therefore" to "monk, you should train in this way."
