Abo asked: Venerable Ananda, did you go with the Blessed One today? Or was it an emanation? He replied: I went with the Blessed One, but it was not an emanation of the Buddha. Whenever I go with the Blessed One, at that time I abide near the Blessed One with particular faith, respect, shame, guilt, and reverence. When it is an emanation of the Buddha, it is not like that. The monks said to each other: Venerable Ananda is skilled in signs. In all directions and regions, the sound spread that the monk Ananda is skilled in signs. Then, the Blessed One stayed in Rajagriha for as long as he wished, and then traveled to where Shravasti was. Gradually traveling, he arrived in Shravasti and stayed in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Anathapindika's Garden. Then, Venerable Ananda, in the morning, having put on his lower garment, and taking his robes and bowl, entered Shravasti for alms. A Brahmin saw him and thought: I have heard that the Shravaka disciple of the ascetic Gautama, the monk Ananda, is skilled in signs. This is him. I will ask him how many leaves this tree called Shapa has. So he asked him: Venerable, how many leaves does this Shapa tree have? He replied: There are so many hundreds, thousands, and hundreds of thousands. Having said that, he left. That Brahmin picked some leaves from it, counted them, and threw them away. Venerable Ananda, having finished his alms round, returned, and that Brahmin said again: Venerable, do you know how many leaves this Shapa tree has now? He replied: Before, there were so many hundreds, thousands, and hundreds of thousands, and so many have been picked from it. That Brahmin was very amazed and said: The Venerable is so skilled in calculation as well. The monks arose with doubts and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: Venerable, what deeds did Venerable Ananda do, that he became skilled in signs? The Blessed One

Thus he spoke. Monks, the deeds done and accumulated by the monk Ananda, from which it is said, 'until it becomes a fruit for sentient beings,' are as before. Monks, in the past, in Varanasi, there was a Brahmin who took a wife from the same caste. He would play with them, rejoice, and enjoy pleasure. As he played, rejoiced, and enjoyed pleasure, a boy was born, and for twenty-one days, a great birth celebration was held for him. He was given a name that matched his caste, and he was raised and grew up. He went to another country and learned sixty thousand teachings of physiognomy. Similarly, in five hundred lifetimes of wandering in samsara, he learned sixty thousand teachings of physiognomy and taught them to others. Due to that cause and condition, wherever he was born, he became the best of the physiognomists. In this way, even in this final existence, he has become the best of the physiognomists. For King Prasenajit of Kosala, every day at breakfast time, a portion of Salu rice, a stalk of sugarcane, and two pieces of meat would fall into the bowl, one of which would fall into the bowl and the other on the ground. He made it known to the venerable Ananda, and he in turn told the monks. The monks were in doubt and asked the Blessed One, the Buddha, who cuts off all doubts: Venerable one, what deed did King Prasenajit of Kosala commit that at mealtime, a portion of Salu rice would fall into the bowl,

There was a large warehouse. Those who were sent brought a portion of Sālu rice, two roasted meats, and a sugarcane stalk from the farmers' village. When the Buddhas do not appear, solitary Buddhas who have compassion for the lowly and evil, who delight in remote dwellings, and who are the sole objects of offering in the world will appear. Then, the solitary Buddha came to Vārāṇasī, and in the morning, having put on his undergarment and skirt, and carrying his Dharma robe and bowl, he went to beg for alms and entered the house of that householder. The householder, seeing that his body was beautiful and his mind was devout, said to him, 'First give me some Sālu rice.' Then he offered a portion of Sālu rice, a sugarcane stalk, and two roasted meats. One of them fell into the bowl, and the other fell on the ground. The Blessed One said, 'Monks, what do you think? The householder of that time was none other than King Prasenajit of Kosala. Because of the ripening of the karma of offering a portion of Sālu rice, a sugarcane stalk, and two roasted meats to the solitary Buddha, he experienced human happiness for many years, many hundreds of years, many thousands of years, and many hundreds of thousands of years. Even now, when it is time for him to eat, a portion of Sālu rice, a sugarcane stalk, and two roasted meats fall into the plate. One of them falls on the plate, and the other falls on the ground.' King Prasenajit of Kosala thought, 'The Blessed One has prophesied one of my past karmic causes, and I know that the fruit of the ripening of karma from the past is real.' Then he developed great faith in the monastic community of the Śrāvakas and abided with the wisdom of believing in the ripening of karma. The diviners prophesied that the venerable Ānanda would be bound by a crown, and King Prasenajit of Kosala heard the news that the venerable Ānanda immediately developed a sty in his eye the next morning, and thought, 'If one does things for the objects of offering, the result of merit will not be without difference.' I should honor him myself.
