That place will become a flourishing place for my teachings. After ordaining, they will serve me and uphold the scriptures. After I have completely entered Nirvana, they will obtain nectar. Mother, I intend to bring the young Nanda into the teachings. Thinking this, the Blessed One, merely to demonstrate, went to Kapilavastu, entered the residence of Amritodana, and sat on the seat that had been prepared. Amritodana placed the young Nanda in another small room. The Blessed One blessed him, saying, 'When will the door open by itself?' Initially, Nanda bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One, took the fan, and fanned the Blessed One beside him. Then, Amritodana bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One and sat aside. After sitting aside, the Blessed One truly showed Amritodana with words in accordance with the Dharma, made him truly believe, made him truly rejoice, and made him truly delight. In many ways, with words in accordance with the Dharma, he truly showed, made him truly believe, made him truly rejoice, made him truly delight, and then got up from his seat and left. Although the power of the cause is great, it also needs to rely on the power of conditions. Therefore, Nanda, the sentient being with the last existence, followed in the footsteps of the Blessed One. Amritodana and his wives and relatives could not stop him. The Blessed One said, 'This is the sentient being with the last existence, you cannot stop him, do not stop him.' Amritodana reported, 'Blessed One, if that is the case, I will do it for him step by step.' The Blessed One said, 'Do it that way!' Then, Amritodana gave alms for the sake of the Shramanas, Brahmins, beggars, the poor, and those who were about to go begging, and made them do good deeds. He also had his relatives and family members ask for forgiveness, and then dressed Nanda with all kinds of decorations, let him ride an elephant, and was surrounded by many people, going to the Nyagrodha monastery.

Then he was sent towards the Blessed One. As he was walking in the middle of the street, an elephant ate a bunch of উৎপala flowers. The fortune-tellers saw it and said: This young man will become the best of those who are learned and have good memory. He rode as far as a horse could go, then dismounted and entered the Nyagrodhārāma with his feet only, and went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. The Blessed One said: Let the young Upāli be ordained. Then he was entrusted to Upāli, the one with the ten powers, who ordained him and gave him full ordination. After that, the Blessed One stayed in Kapilavastu for as long as he pleased, and then went to Rājagṛha. He gradually traveled and arrived at Rājagṛha, and stayed in the Kalantaka bird grove in the bright garden of Rājagṛha. A boil appeared on the head of the venerable Ānanda, and the Blessed One said to Jīvaka: Bhikṣu Ānanda, please examine it. Venerable one, as you command. The young Jīvaka listened to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One sat on the seat prepared for the Saṃgha of Bhikṣus and taught the Dharma. The venerable Ānanda was also sitting there to listen to the Dharma. The young Jīvaka thought: This person's faith in the Dharma is so strong that he does not feel it, now is the time to examine it. So, he applied medicine to ripen his boil, then cut it open on the spot and healed it on the spot. After the Dharma talk was over, Jīvaka reported: Blessed One, while the venerable Ānanda was still here, I ripened his boil, then cut it open and healed it. The venerable Ānanda said: Even if my body were cut into sesame seeds, I would not feel it. Jīvaka was very amazed at the faith and concentration produced by the Blessed One's Dharma. The Bhikṣus had doubts, so they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who can cut off all doubts: Venerable one, the venerable

What karma did Ānanda commit? Therefore, a boil appeared on his head. The Blessed One said: Monks, the karma done and accumulated by this monk Ānanda, from "named" to "will ripen as fruit for sentient beings," is as previously stated. Monks, in the past, in a remote region, there lived a king named Kirata. When Buddhas did not appear, in the world, a solitary Buddha with compassion for the inferior and the wicked, who delighted in remote dwellings, the sole object of offerings in the world, would arise. Then, a solitary Buddha wandered there, arrived in the city of Kirata, and entered the house of King Kirata for alms. The king felt displeasure towards him and, with a malicious mind, struck him on the back with a lump of clay. That great being, having subdued pride and arrogance, knew that he was not a suitable vessel and left. Monks, what do you think? That King Kirata was none other than the monk Ānanda. Because he felt displeasure towards the solitary Buddha and, with a malicious mind, struck him on the back with a lump of clay, the ripening of that karma caused him to have boils on his head in five hundred lifetimes, wherever he was born. Like this, even in his final existence, a boil appeared on his head. When the venerable Ānanda walked together with the Blessed One, he was especially devoted, respectful, conscientious, ashamed, and cautious towards the Blessed One, and therefore stayed close to the Blessed One. If he were an emanation, he would not have such faith, respect, shame, conscientiousness, and caution. How many times did a householder invite the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to his house for a meal? The Blessed One, in the early morning, having put on his robes and lower garments, carrying his bowl and Dharma robes, surrounded by the assembly of monks, walked in front of the Sangha of monks and went to the house of that householder. After the meal, he returned. Monks, the venerable Ānanda
