The Blessed One did not accept it, saying that it had not been inspected. Then the monkey went to one side, washed it with cold water, and offered it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One accepted it, saying that it had been inspected. Then the monkey, realizing that the Blessed One had accepted my honey bowl, felt joy, satisfaction, great joy, and happiness. He joined his palms together, danced outwards, and prostrated. From this, he developed faith in the Blessed One, thinking of the Blessed One and not looking back, he fell into a well and died. He was reborn in the house of a Brahmin with a pleasant voice, one who was diligent in the six occupations. On the very day that he took conception, there was a rain of honey. Therefore, (his parents) summoned the diviners and said to them, and they said: This is the power of this being. Before long, the Brahmin woman passed eight or nine months and gave birth to a boy. On the very day that he was born, there was also a rain of honey. His relatives gathered together and held a grand birth celebration for twenty-one days, and discussed what name to give the boy. The relatives said: On the very day that this boy entered the womb, there was a rain of honey, and on the very day that he was born, there was also a rain of honey, and he shares the same lineage and clan as (his father), therefore the boy should be named 'Honey-possessor, son of the householder.' So, he was named 'Honey-possessor, son of the householder.' He was raised and grew up. When he grew up, he went forth into the well-spoken Dharma-Vinaya. After he went forth, he obtained three bowls of honey each day. He offered one of them to the Blessed One, the second to the Sangha, and the third he enjoyed together with his companions. The monks became doubtful and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: Venerable sir, what deed did the venerable Honey-possessor, son of the householder, commit?

Then, the maturation of that karma resulted in three honey pots being produced for each umbrella. The Blessed One said: Monks, the son of the dwelling place named Honey Pot, he obtained the collection of karma, the conditions were completely transformed, abiding like a ray of light, and even for sentient beings it will become a fruit, just as mentioned before. Monks, have you seen the monkey who offered the honey pot to the Tathagata? The monks replied: We have seen it, Venerable One. The monkey at that time was this son of the dwelling place named Honey Pot. Therefore, the maturation of the karma of his offering of the honey pot to the Tathagata caused him to be born in the house of a Brahmin who was diligent in six activities, and even at the time of conception and birth, there was a rain of honey. Just like that, even now, three honey pots will be produced every day. Monks, therefore, karma is completely black, and maturation is also completely black, and even one should strive to engage in karma that is completely white, just as mentioned before. Why is that? If the monk, the son of the dwelling place named Honey Pot, were to desire honey from the great ocean of the east, and the great oceans of the south, west, and north were also to desire honey, then those would also become honey. Monks, in that case, the field of merit, the Tathagata, is immeasurable. The monks arose with doubt, and in order to dispel all doubts, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who dispels doubts: Venerable One, what karma did the venerable Ananda commit, that the maturation of that karma caused him to become the king's barber? The Blessed One said: Monks, the karma that this Ananda did and accumulated in other previous lifetimes, and the collection that he obtained, is, even for sentient beings it will become a fruit, just as mentioned before. Monks, in the past there was a king's barber, a Pratyekabuddha went to him, asking him to cut a beautiful hairstyle, and said: May you gain merit. He also went to the king's palace, and he said to his nephew: Nephew, this renunciate

Shave my head. I must go to the king's palace, treat me as you would treat the king. He thought, my uncle said such things, it seems that this person must be very blessed and will not be eaten by ghosts. So he respectfully shaved his hair and beard. The Pratyekabuddha thought, this sentient being has accumulated a lot of merit, he should be made to do good, so out of compassion for him, he rose into the sky and began to display the miracles of burning, shining, raining, and lightning. Because ordinary people are quick to believe in miracles, he prostrated with both feet on the ground as if cutting off the roots of a tree, and began to pray. By this root of virtue, just as my uncle became the king's barber, may I also become the king's barber. Monks, what do you think? Who was the nephew of the king's barber? It was this monk, Near Guard. Because he shaved the hair and beard of the Pratyekabuddha and prayed, his karma matured and he became the king's barber. Also, listen to what he prayed for. Monks, in the past there lived a householder at the foot of a mountain. He took a wife from the same caste and played with her, rejoiced, and enjoyed himself. They played, rejoiced, and enjoyed themselves, and a son was born. Again they played, rejoiced, and enjoyed themselves, and a son was born, and so on, successively seven sons were born. One of his relatives was a barber of the king, who had no children, so he rested his cheek on his hand and thought: I have neither son nor daughter, all my possessions will be possessed by the king. He sat there sullenly, and was seen by that householder, who said: Relative, why are you sullen? He said: Relative, I have so much wealth, but neither son nor daughter, and after I die, all these will be possessed by the king.
