To be devoted to self-mortification is painful, unholy, and associated with harm. You should not rely on these two extremes; the Middle Way is the eye, is wisdom, is conducive to peace, is manifest knowledge, is perfect enlightenment, and is conducive to Nirvana. What is the Middle Way? It is this Noble Eightfold Path, namely: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. The Blessed One made the five groups of monks understand by what is to be known. When the Blessed One imparted instructions to two of the five groups of monks in the morning, three entered the city for alms; whatever the three accomplished, all six lived on it. When the Blessed One imparted instructions to three of the five groups of monks in the afternoon, two entered the city for alms; whatever the two accomplished, the five groups lived on it; the Thus-Gone One only ate in the morning. Then, the Blessed One said to the five groups of monks: Monks, when I properly directed my mind to the previously unheard-of teachings, saying, "This is the noble truth of suffering," the eye arose, knowledge arose, understanding arose, wisdom arose, and realization arose. Monks, when I properly directed my mind to the previously unheard-of teachings, saying, "This is the origin of suffering, this is the cessation of suffering, this is the path leading to the cessation of suffering," the eye arose, knowledge arose, understanding arose, wisdom arose, and realization arose. Monks, when I properly directed my mind to the previously unheard-of teachings, saying, "This noble truth of suffering should be fully understood by me through manifest knowledge," the eye arose, knowledge arose, understanding arose, wisdom arose, and realization arose. Monks, when I properly directed my mind to the previously unheard-of teachings, saying, "This noble truth of the origin of suffering should be abandoned by me through manifest knowledge," the eye arose, knowledge arose, understanding arose, and

Wisdom and realization arose. Monks, when I properly directed my mind to the truth of the noble path leading to the cessation of suffering, saying, 'I must realize this,' with respect to things I had never heard before, the eye arose, knowledge, understanding, wisdom, and realization arose. Monks, when I properly directed my mind to the truth of the noble path leading to the cessation of suffering, saying, 'I must cultivate this,' with respect to things I had never heard before, the eye arose, knowledge, understanding, wisdom, and realization arose. Monks, when I properly directed my mind to the truth of the noble path leading to the cessation of suffering, saying, 'I must fully understand this,' with respect to things I had never heard before, the eye arose, knowledge, understanding, wisdom, and realization arose. Monks, when I properly directed my mind to the truth of the noble truth of the origin of suffering, saying, 'I must abandon this,' with respect to things I had never heard before, the eye arose, knowledge, understanding, wisdom, and realization arose. Monks, when I properly directed my mind to the truth of the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, saying, 'I must realize this,' with respect to things I had never heard before, the eye arose, knowledge, understanding, wisdom, and realization arose. Monks, when I properly directed my mind to the truth of the noble path leading to the cessation of suffering, saying, 'I must cultivate this,' with respect to things I had never heard before, the eye arose, knowledge, understanding, wisdom, and realization arose. Monks, as long as the eye had not arisen, knowledge was not present, understanding was not present, wisdom was not present, and realization had not arisen with respect to these four noble truths, repeated in this way three times, revolving in twelve aspects, I had not been liberated from this world with its gods, with its demons, with its Brahma, with its ascetics and Brahmins, and with its beings including gods and humans; I had not definitively emerged, was not in disunity, was not completely liberated, and did not abide greatly with a mind free from perversion. Monks, I would not have declared that I had fully awakened to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment.
