The Chapter on Retinue. The Chapter on Retinue. Summary verse: Among the four wheels, there is youth, fathers and sons meet, the self-born Shakya thus, I prostrate to you who protect the crest jewel. Then, two gods from the Brahma host, residing in the Brahma world, thought to themselves: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, is dwelling in the place of growth, by the Nairanjana River, under the Bodhi tree, having attained complete and perfect enlightenment not long ago, and having entered into the fire element samadhi, he has spent seven days in a single lotus posture, and no one has offered him alms. We should go there and praise him with verses. Then, the two gods of the Brahma host, as quickly as a strong man bends and stretches his arm, the two gods of the Brahma host disappeared from the Brahma world and went before the Bhagavan, sitting down on one side. One of the two gods of the Brahma host, in the form of a verse, requested: O guide, victor in battle, without sin, arise and look upon the world. Precious Dharma will be sought, Sugata, please speak the supreme Dharma. The other also requested in the form of a verse: You have destroyed pride, victor in battle, without sin, arise and look upon the world. Like the full moon on the fifteenth day, your mind is so pure. After praying thus, they immediately disappeared. Then, the Bhagavan arose from that samadhi, and at that time spoke in the form of a verse: Whatever happiness is desired in the world, and whatever happiness arises in the heavenly realms, for the happiness of the exhaustion of existence, even one-sixteenth is not enough. Carrying a burden is suffering, abandoning a burden is happiness. Having abandoned the heavy burdens, one should not take up other burdens. Having completely abandoned all craving, and after all compounded things have ceased, having completely known all things, one will not be reborn again. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, experiencing the joy and happiness of liberation, spent seven days in a single lotus posture, and no one offered him alms.

year. At that time, the merchants Gagaon and Sangpo, along with about five hundred carts, were going to Dongwa and embarked on that very road. Then, a god who was a former friend, minister, relative, and friend of the merchants Gagaon and Sangpo thought to himself: "The Buddha, the Bhagavan, is in Lengye by the Nairanjana River, under the Bodhi tree. Not long after attaining complete enlightenment, he is experiencing the joy and bliss of liberation, and has spent seven days in a single lotus posture. No one has offered him alms. If the two merchants, Gagaon and Sangpo, were to offer him alms there first, it would be for the long-term benefit, happiness, and well-being of those two merchants, Gagaon and Sangpo. Therefore, I myself should strive to have these two offer alms to the Bhagavan." Then, that god illuminated the carts and all the merchants with great light, and said to the merchants Gagaon and Sangpo: "Merchants, merchants, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, is in Lengye by the Nairanjana River, under the Bodhi tree. Not long after attaining complete enlightenment, he is experiencing the joy and bliss of liberation, and has spent seven days in a single lotus posture. No one has offered him alms. If you offer him alms there first, it will be for your long-term benefit, happiness, and well-being." Having said this, that god disappeared. Then, the two merchants, Gagaon and Sangpo, thought to themselves: "The Buddha is not without excellence, and the Dharma he teaches is not without excellence, because even a god is striving to encourage us to offer alms to the Bhagavan." So, taking a large amount of honey and beeswax, they went to where the Bhagavan was, and upon arriving, they bowed their heads to the feet of the Bhagavan and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, Gagaon and Sangpo

They said, "Venerable one, for the sake of the Blessed One, we offer here a great deal of honey and deku fruit. Blessed One, please accept this with compassion." Then, the Blessed One thought, "If I accept alms with my hand, it would be like a heretic, which is not my way. Rather, I should consider where the Buddhas of the past, the perfectly complete enlightened ones, accepted alms in order to benefit sentient beings." Then, the gods said to the Blessed One, "Venerable one, the Buddhas of the past, the perfectly complete enlightened ones, accepted alms in a bowl in order to benefit sentient beings." The Blessed One also generated thoughts and wisdom, observing that the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones of the past, indeed accepted alms in a bowl in order to benefit sentient beings. After that, the Blessed One needed a bowl. Then, the four great kings, knowing that the Blessed One needed a bowl, took four stone bowls made from a rocky mountain, not made by humans, nor taken by humans, and they were bright, clean, and without unpleasant odors. They went to where the Blessed One was, bowed their heads to the Blessed One's feet, and sat to one side. Sitting to one side, the four great kings said to the Blessed One, "Venerable one, we know that the Blessed One needs a bowl, so we have brought here four stone bowls made from a rocky mountain, not made by humans, nor carefully crafted by humans, and they are bright, clean, and without unpleasant odors.
