reported, "Venerable, Rangjye's son Lhajye passed away yesterday evening." The Blessed One also entered into contemplation, generating the eye of wisdom, and Rangjye's son Lhajye passed away in the evening. Then, the Blessed One thought to himself: "Alas, the death of Rangjye's son Lhajye is truly unfortunate! Alas, the death of Rangjye's son Lhajye is truly unfortunate, for he has not heard this Dharma-Vinaya. If he had heard this Dharma-Vinaya, he would have understood it." Then, the Blessed One thought to himself: "To whom should I first teach the Dharma?" Then he thought: "I should first teach the Dharma to the five monks, for they used to attend to me with reverence, respect, and affection when I was previously engaged in asceticism to abandon suffering." Then, the Blessed One thought to himself: "Where are the five monks now?" The Blessed One, with his pure divine eye, surpassing the abilities of ordinary people, saw that the five monks were dwelling in the Deer Park at Varanasi where the sages speak. Having seen this, the Blessed One remained at the foot of the Bodhi tree for as long as he wished, and then proceeded to wander to the city of Kashi in Varanasi. At that time, a wandering ascetic named Nyerjo was also walking on the same road. The wandering ascetic Nyerjo saw the Blessed One coming from the road. Having seen him, he said this: "Ascetic Gautama, your senses are clear, your countenance is very pleasing, and your skin is radiant. Elder Gautama, who is your teacher? Upon whom did you rely to renounce the world? Whose teachings do you admire?" The Blessed One then answered in verse: "There is truly no one equal to me. I have no teacher, nor any peer. I am the only Buddha in the world. Having attained the supreme and perfect enlightenment. I have subdued all, knowing all in the world. I am not stained by any dharmas. I have abandoned all, freed from craving and liberated. Having realized it myself, upon whom should I rely? The Tathagata is the teacher of gods and humans."

Possessing all the power of omniscience, having attained enlightenment, you proclaimed it widely. If there is no equal, upon whom do you rely? I am the Arhat of the world, I am the unsurpassed one in the world. In the world including the gods, I am the victor, subduing the power of demons. Do you call yourself the venerable Gautama, the victor? Who has attained the exhaustion of defilements? Know that the victor is like me. Because I have destroyed the evil dharma, therefore, follower, I am the victor. Venerable Gautama, where are you going? After going to Varanasi, I will sound the drum of the Dharma, and for what has not been turned in the world, the wheel of the Dharma will be turned. The all-knowing Buddha who has transcended the arising and ceasing of the world has become peaceful. If the world is not liberated, a noble person will not be known. Venerable Gautama, the victor, well done! After praying in this way, the wandering follower left the road. Then, the Blessed One traveled through the country of Kashi and went to Varanasi. At that time, the five monks were dwelling in the Deer Park at Isipatana in Varanasi. The five monks saw the Blessed One from afar. Having seen him, they specially thought to each other, settled down, and established the rule: "Wise ones, the Shramana Gautama is unstable, has many affairs, lives by being supported by many, has abandoned practice, now eats a lot of rice and hot porridge, anoints his body with fresh oil and sesame oil, and bathes his body with warm water. He is coming, and when he comes to us, do not speak to him, do not bow, do not rise, do not stand up to spread a seat. Otherwise, just spread a long seat and say these words: 'Venerable Gautama, there is a seat, sit down if you wish.'" Thus they established the rule. As the Blessed One approached to look at the five monks, in the same way, the five monks could not bear the splendor, glory, and respect of the Blessed One, and stood up from their seats. Some prepared seats for the Blessed One. Some prepared water for washing feet and footrests, and placed them on one side. Some

Having welcomed, taking robes, Dharma robes, etc., they say thus: "Wise Gautama, please come! Wise Gautama, it is good that you have come! Wise Gautama, please sit on the seat that has been prepared!" Then, the Blessed One thought thus: "Alas, these foolish people make rules and then break them themselves." Knowing this, he sat on the prepared seat. Then, the five groups of monks especially uttered the name of the Blessed One, uttered from the lineage, and uttered with the venerable one, they universally uttered. Then, the Blessed One spoke to the five groups of monks: "Monks, you especially should not universally utter the name of the Thus-Gone One, utter from the lineage, and utter with the venerable one. It will be harmful to you for a long time, not beneficial, and will become suffering. Why is that? Monks, whoever especially utters the name of the Thus-Gone One, utters from the lineage, and universally utters with the venerable one, that foolish person will be harmed for a long time, not benefited, and will become suffering. They said thus: "Venerable Gautama, have you, for a while, through your former conduct, practice, and asceticism, been able to attain the superior qualities of the noble human Dharma, or have you known, seen, or touched and dwelt even a little? Now, you are unstable and have much work, and are nourished by many and neglect abandonment, so now you eat much rice porridge, warm gruel, and food, and anoint your body with fresh butter and sesame oil, and bathe your body with soft water, what need is there to mention it? Monks, do you see that the complexion and faculties of the Thus-Gone One are clear and different from before?" They said thus: "Venerable Gautama, it is so." Then, the Blessed One spoke to the five groups of monks: "Monks, one who has gone forth should not rely on these two extremes. One should not befriend them. One should not befriend and respect them. What are the two? To strive after the alms of desire for desires. What is inferior, bad, base, and wretched, and
