When the departed ones generate the mundane Bodhicitta, even the minds of creatures like ants and corpses can understand the Blessed One's intention. What need is there to mention the gods like Indra and Brahma? When the supramundane Bodhicitta is generated, even the minds of the great Shravakas cannot understand the Blessed One's intention. What need is there to mention the gods like Indra and Brahma? How could creatures like ants and corpses possibly know? Then, Indra, the lord of the gods, thought to himself: "Why does the Blessed One generate the mundane Bodhicitta?" He thought to himself: "He intends to teach the Dharma to the pure assembly of gods." So, he commanded all the artisan sons of the gods: "All you artisans, the Blessed One intends to teach the Dharma to the pure assembly of gods. Manifest a mansion of four precious materials in the Nyagrodha Grove, adorned with various cushions. Kauśika, you are the best!" All the artisan sons of the gods, having heard the command from Indra, the lord of the gods, manifested a mansion of four precious materials in the Nyagrodha Grove, adorned with various cushions. Then, the four great kings were stationed at each of the four gates: Dhritarashtra, Virudhaka, Virupaksha, and Vaishravana. In the east was Dhritarashtra, adorned with all the ornaments of the army. In the south was Virudhaka, adorned with all the ornaments of the gods. In the west was Virupaksha, adorned with various jewels. In the north was Vaishravana, adorned with all ornaments. Then, Indra, the lord of the gods, had the Nyagrodha Grove decorated grandly and extensively. He went to where the Blessed One was and reported the matter in detail to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of gods including Indra and Brahma, entered the mansion and sat in the midst of the great assembly of gods on a lion throne adorned with various jewels. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana led King Śuddhodana to where the Blessed One was.

Then, the great son of the long-lived Modgala entered, and King Suddhodana was stopped by the Four Great Kings. Dhritarashtra, the Great King, said: Great King, do not enter, please stay. Why? Because the Blessed One is teaching the Dharma to the pure retinue of the gods, and it is not permissible for ordinary people to enter. King Suddhodana said: Good sir, who are you? Dhritarashtra said: Great King, I am Dhritarashtra. Then, when King Suddhodana went to the south gate, Virudhaka, the Great King, saw him and said: Great King, do not enter, please stay. King Suddhodana said: Good sir, who are you? Virudhaka said: Great King, I am Virudhaka. Why? Because the Blessed One is teaching the Dharma to the pure retinue of the gods, and it is not permissible for those whose names have changed to enter. Then, when King Suddhodana went to the west gate, Virupaksha, the Great King, saw him and said: Great King, do not enter, please stay. King Suddhodana said: Good sir, who are you? Virupaksha said: Great King, I am Virupaksha. Why? Because the Blessed One is teaching the Dharma to the pure retinue of the gods, and it is not permissible for those who have become ordinary people to enter. Then, when King Suddhodana went to the north gate, Vaishravana, the Great King, saw him and said: Great King, do not enter, please stay. King Suddhodana said: Good sir, who are you? Vaishravana said: Great King, I am Vaishravana. Why? Because the Blessed One is teaching the Dharma to the pure retinue of the gods, and it is not permissible for those who have become ordinary people to enter. Then, King Suddhodana thought: Alas! The Blessed One is teaching the Dharma to the pure retinue of the gods, I should go and see. Then, King Suddhodana became free from all feelings of dejection. The Blessed One thought: If King Suddhodana does not see (me), he may vomit blood and die, so I should arrange a convenient method for him. Then, the Blessed One transformed the palace built of four kinds of jewels into one made of crystal, so King Suddhodana

He could see Shakyamuni's form without any obstruction. Having seen him, he felt joy and satisfaction, bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One, and sat down on one side. Then, the Blessed One, knowing the thoughts, habits, faculties, and nature of King Śuddhodana, taught the Dharma in such a way that he would realize the four noble truths individually. Having heard this, King Śuddhodana, with the vajra of wisdom, shattered the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates, and directly realized the fruit of stream-entry. Having seen that truth, he solemnly said three times, solemnly said: "Venerable Blessed One, please consider me! I am not a king, not a god, not of the past Buddhas, not of the ascetics and Brahmins, not of suffering, not the master of my own people and relatives, but what the Blessed One has made me. You have dried up the ocean of blood and tears, delivered me from the mountain of bones, closed the gates of the lower realms, opened the gates to heaven and liberation, and placed me in the realm of gods and humans." He further requested: "You bestow benefits with meager means, whatever a noble son should do, you have done for me, making my mind inclined towards liberation. You have rescued me from the lower realms, led me to heaven and liberation, and placed me there without concealment. The efforts you have made are truly excellent! Compassionate protector, you, like a merchant who has gained wealth, have made me gain the enjoyments of existence by gaining the wealth of heaven." Then, King Śuddhodana rose from his seat, bared one shoulder, folded his palms towards the direction of the Blessed One, and said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, if tomorrow you could come to my palace with the community of monks to accept offerings, please grant your permission." The Blessed One did not say anything to King Śuddhodana, thus granting his permission. Then, King Śuddhodana, knowing that the Blessed One's silence meant permission, bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One, departed from the presence of the Blessed One, went to the kitchen, and upon arriving, said these words to the cook.
