More beautiful to wear fine clothes, Why wear rough monastic robes? How can your body endure such attire? The Blessed One said: "O King, my clothes know shame, My garment is a patched robe. Those who can wear it, the peaceful ones, Will appear more beautiful in the forest." King Śuddhodana asked: "In the past, you used to eat from golden plates, Enjoying various delicious rice dishes, Now, noble one, how can you be content, Eating this ordinary alms food?" The Blessed One said: "Having abandoned all craving for food, Combined with renunciation and meditation, Now I partake of the supreme taste of Dharma, I eat for the sake of compassion for all beings." King Śuddhodana asked: "In the past, you drank the waters of winter springs, Bringing much happiness, Now, how can you drink, This turbid and warm water?" The Blessed One said: "O King, whatever one drinks, To me, all beverages, Appear like poison, I drink the supreme taste of Dharma." King Śuddhodana asked: "In the past, you lived in cool, immeasurable palaces, Residing on copper terraces, like in every season, Now you live alone in the forest, Virtuous one, how do you dwell without dismay?" The Blessed One said: "Gautama, what is the root of fear? Because I have completely abandoned, All defilements, including habitual tendencies, I dwell in a state free from sorrow and fear, I have no fear here at all." King Śuddhodana asked: "In the past, you enjoyed bathing in extremely delightful bathhouses, Always cool with excellent and special baths, Now you live alone in the forest, Great Sage, who bathes you now?" The Blessed One said: "Gautama, the stainless pool of Dharma, Guarded by the coolness and firmness of discipline, There, washing with the merits of wisdom, Without wetting the body, one completely crosses beyond." King Śuddhodana asked: "What can harm you? What can give rise to fear? And what can give rise to weariness? Please tell me these things." The Blessed One said: "What can harm me, What can cause me fear, And what can cause me weariness,

Listen, I will tell you. Old age, sickness, and death—if these three did not exist, I would be very delighted and happy in all places. King Śuddhodana made offerings, the Śākyas rejoiced, and the warrior who fought well was excellent. How are you not tainted by the eight worldly dharmas? Then, greatly increasing joy and faith, after inviting the righteous monastic community, he bowed his head at the feet of the Buddha and contemplated the Sugata in every way. Then, King Śuddhodana thought to himself: "That my son has attained such a collection of qualities is a great gain for me!" Then, the Blessed One, in the Nyagrodha Park, knowing the thoughts, predispositions, faculties, and nature of that assembly, taught the Dharma in accordance with them. Having heard this, seventy-seven thousand Śākyas, including Śuklodana, realized the fruit of stream-entry, except for King Śuddhodana. Devadatta, more arrogant than arrogance itself, desiring evil, not having seen the truth, completely enveloped by anger, said: "If I knew how to control with such magic, I would also control the entire world." To this, the Śākyas spoke with words of friendship: "Devadatta, the Blessed One has great magical powers and great strength, do not speak like that, please restrain yourself and remain silent." In the Joyful Grove surrounded by Brahmā, he taught the Dharma in this way. Having heard this, sixty-six thousand Śākyas, including Rice-Cooker, realized the fruit of stream-entry, except for King Śuddhodana, but Devadatta continued to speak harshly as before. In the Joyful Grove of Rohitaka, he taught the Dharma in this way. Having heard this, seventy-five thousand Śākyas, including Amṛtodana, realized the fruit of stream-entry, except for King Śuddhodana, but Devadatta continued to speak harshly as before. Among the remaining retinue, some generated the mind of a Śrāvaka Bodhi, some generated the mind of a Pratyekabuddha Bodhi, and some generated the unsurpassed perfect

arose the mind of unsurpassed enlightenment. Some realized the fruit of entering the stream, some the fruit of once returning, some the fruit of non-returning, some renounced and abandoned all afflictions and became arhats. Some took refuge in the Buddha, some in the Dharma, some in the Sangha. Those retinues also mostly inclined towards the Buddha, tended towards the Dharma, and tended towards the Sangha. Then King Śuddhodana thought: "Formerly, the Blessed One was worshipped, remembered, and openly praised by beings including gods and asuras, but now only humans worship him, not the gods." Then a young Śākya spoke in verse: "Great sage, supreme speaker, with the rain of the sacred Dharma, you satisfy these beings. This terrible world fallen into the evil path, guide it straight to the path of liberation." King Śuddhodana thought: "My son has such great magical powers and such great strength!" Thus, he did not see the truth because of excessive joy. The Blessed One's thought was: "Why did King Śuddhodana not see the truth?" Because he thought: "My son has such great magical powers and strength!" Thus, he became excessively joyful. In short, he should be made to abandon his pride. There are two reasons why truths are not seen: excessive depression and excessive joy. Because he has a depressed mind and excessive joy, he should be made to abandon both depression and excessive joy. Then the Blessed One said to the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana: "Maudgalyāyana, visit King Śuddhodana." The venerable replied: "As you command." Having heard from the Blessed One, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana went to where King Śuddhodana was. King Śuddhodana saw the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana coming from afar, and having seen him, he said to the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana: "Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, please come here. Mahāmaudgalyāyana, it is good that you have come!"
