After contemplating, he spoke thus: 'Where is a place that is neither too far nor too near to Shravasti, with little daytime commotion and noise, quiet at night, with little sound, and little disturbance from mosquitoes, horseflies, wind, sun, and poisonous snakes? Where should I build a monastery for the Blessed One?' Thinking thus, the householder Anathapindika saw Prince Jeta's grove, which was neither too far nor too near to Shravasti, with little daytime commotion and noise, quiet at night, with little sound, and little disturbance from mosquitoes, horseflies, wind, sun, and poisonous snakes. Having seen it, he thought: 'I should build a monastery for the Blessed One here.' So, without returning to his own house, he went directly to where Prince Jeta was, and upon arriving, he said to Prince Jeta: 'Prince, please give me the grove; I will build a monastery there for the Blessed One.' He said: 'Householder, that is not my grove; although it is a pleasure garden, it is mine.' The householder Anathapindika said to Prince Jeta two or three times: 'Prince, please give me the grove; I will build a monastery there for the Blessed One.' 'Householder, even if you spread hundreds of millions of gold, I will not give up this grove.' །། Vinaya-vastu, Volume Ninety. The householder Anathapindika then said to Prince Jeta: 'Prince, please estimate the value of the grove; please take wealth and gold, the grove is mine.' 'Who will estimate the price?' Having manifested themselves as human beings, they gathered together for a purpose. Then, the householder Anathapindika and the youth Jeta went to the place belonging to the great decision-makers. Then, the householder Anathapindika explained the matter in detail to those belonging to the great decision-makers. They said, 'Youth, since the value of the Jetavana has been determined, pay the gold. The Jetavana belongs to the householder.' He sat there without saying a word. Then, the householder Anathapindika loaded many gold pieces onto carts, bushels, boxes, leather bags, oxen, and donkeys, and came and began to cover all of Prince Jeta's gardens. Because some places were not covered, they remained unspread. Then, the householder Anathapindika pondered the matter and remained silent for a moment, thinking, 'What treasure, neither too little nor too much, can cover this unspread place, so that it does not need to be spread again?' The youth Jeta thought, 'Is the householder Anathapindika possessed? Why is he giving up such a great wealth for the sake of the Jetavana?' Then, the householder Anāthapiṇḍada began to build a monastery for the Blessed One, and the heretics gathered those with minds aroused by strong hatred, went to where the householder Anāthapiṇḍada was, and having arrived, said: Householder, you should not build a monastery for the Śrāmaṇa Gautama. Why? We have divided the city, Śrāmaṇa Gautama's is Rājagṛha, and ours is Śrāvastī. Anāthapiṇḍada said: You have divided the cities, but you have not divided my wealth, so I will build a Dharma assembly for whomever I like best. They went to the king, and there too the householder Anāthapiṇḍada defeated them, and the heretics spoke nonsense, saying: Householder, you should not be happy, let one of the best of the Śrāmaṇa Gautama's disciples come, and if his debate defeats us, then build the monastery. He said: Okay, let's ask the venerable Śāriputra for a while. Then, the householder Anāthapiṇḍada went to where the venerable Śāriputra was, and having arrived, bowed his head to the two feet of the venerable Śāriputra, and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the householder Anāthapiṇḍada said these words to the venerable Śāriputra: Venerable Śāriputra, the heretics say this: Householder, you should not be happy, let one of the best of the Śrāmaṇa Gautama's disciples come, and if his debate defeats us, then build the monastery. What should I do about that? The venerable Śāriputra thought: Do these people have a little root of virtue, or do they not? He saw that they did. He thought: Who does it depend on? It depends on me alone. Again he thought: Will just these words that depend on me alone subdue them? Or are there other words that can subdue them? He saw that there were.
