Who is called "Sa-gyä"? Householder, it is the son of the renunciant Gautama Shakya, who, from the Shakya clan, shaved his hair and beard, donned ochre robes, and through pure faith alone, went forth from home to homelessness, and attained the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Householder, that is called the Buddha. Who is called the "Sangha"? Householder, whether from the Kshatriya caste, sons of good families shave their hair and beard, don ochre robes, and through pure faith alone, go forth from home to homelessness, following the Blessed One. From the Brahmin caste, the Vaishya caste, and the Shudra caste, sons of good families shave their hair and beard, don ochre robes, and through pure faith alone, go forth from home to homelessness, following the Blessed One. Householder, that is called the Sangha. Tomorrow, I will invite the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to my house for alms. Householder, where is the Blessed One residing now? He is residing in the Cool Grove charnel ground in this very Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir, Bihar). Householder, may we see the Blessed One? Householder, wait a moment for that. If the Blessed One comes here tomorrow, you will have the opportunity to see him. Then, the householder Anathapindika went to sleep with mindfulness focused on the Buddha. Before dawn, thinking it was dawn, he went to where the south gate was. At that time, the south gate was opened and left open for two periods. The first period was opened to allow messengers who arrived suddenly to pass through without hindrance. The second period was opened to allow messengers who were preparing to leave to pass through without hindrance. Then, the householder Anathapindika thought to himself: "By leaving the south gate open like this, I fear I will be eaten by demons." When he realized this, he came out of the city. As soon as he came out, the light disappeared and turned into darkness again. He became frightened, terrified, and his hair stood on end, and he thought: "Am I a human?"

Or is it not so? Thinking that he might be harmed by some with evil intentions, he wanted to return. Then, the deity residing at the southern gate, illuminated the entire area from the southern gate to the charnel ground of the cool forest with vast light, and said to Anathapindika, the householder: "Householder, go forward! Do not return! It will be better for you to go forward, but not to return. That is because: A hundred horses and a hundred gold ornaments, A hundred carriages made of Deu wood, Adorned with various jewels, A hundred carriages pulled by mares. Even losing a single step's distance, One cannot bear even a sixteenth part. Householder, go forward! Do not return! It will be better for you to go forward, but not to return. That is because: A hundred elephants from the snowy mountains, Adorned with gold and jewels, Large bodies, possessing plowshare-like tusks, Growing lush matang grass, with huge bellies. Even losing a single step's distance, One cannot bear even a sixteenth part. Householder, go forward! Do not return! It will be better for you to go forward, but not to return. That is because: A hundred girls from the land of Tokhar, Wearing earrings and bracelets, Wearing golden armlets, Their necks adorned with ornaments. Even losing a single step's distance, One cannot bear even a sixteenth part. Householder, go forward! Do not return! It will be better for you to go forward, but not to return." Then, Anathapindika, the householder, said to that divine son: "Fair-faced one, who are you?" The divine son said: "Householder, I am your old friend, the Brahmin's son, Honey Cluster. Having generated faith in the two monks, Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, and having died, I was born as a god in the retinue of the Four Great Kings, and I dwell here at this southern gate. Therefore, I say to you: Householder, go forward! Do not return! It will be better for you to go forward, but not to return." Then, Anathapindika, the householder...
