The benefactor thought to himself: 'Alas, isn't the Buddha, the Bhagavan, the most supreme? And isn't the teaching also the most supreme? Now, even the gods are striving to behold the Bhagavan.' Thinking this, he went to the charnel ground in the cool grove. At that time, the Bhagavan was walking outside the monastery, in a place without an overhang, and was especially waiting for the arrival of the benefactor Anathapindika. Then, the benefactor Anathapindika went to where the Bhagavan was, and having gone there, he made the Bhagavan completely pleased with complete joy. Bhagavan, do you sleep comfortably? Then, the Bhagavan spoke in verse at that time: 'Whoever is not stained by desire, the one who is without outflows and completely liberated, the Brahmin who has completely passed into Nirvana, sleeps peacefully at all times. Here, having cut off all hope, and having dispelled all the feverish sicknesses of the heart, with a heart that has attained peace, he sleeps peacefully in near tranquility.' Then, the Bhagavan led the benefactor Anathapindika into the monastery and sat on the prepared seat. The benefactor Anathapindika bowed to the feet of the Bhagavan with his head and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the Bhagavan correctly instructed the benefactor Anathapindika with talk that was in accordance with the Dharma, caused him to correctly grasp it, correctly praised him, and correctly made him rejoice. What is the Dharma that the Buddhas, the Bhagavatans, speak of at the beginning? It is the talk of generosity, the talk of ethics, the talk of heaven, and the smallness of desires, their faults, defilements, purification, renunciation, and the praise of the benefits of solitude, and he correctly taught in detail the Dharma that is in accordance with the aspect of purification. When the Bhagavan saw that the mind of that place was a joyful mind, a virtuous mind, a satisfied mind, a mind free from obscurations, and that it was endowed with good fortune and able to understand all the teachings of the excellent Dharma, the Buddhas, the Bhagavatans

And also correctly and completely explained the Dharma, what are the Four Noble Truths? That is, suffering, origin, cessation, and path, which are widely explained. For example, just as a clean and flawless cloth placed in a suitable dye can be well dyed, so too, the householder Anāthapiṇḍada, while sitting on that seat, realized the Four Noble Truths, namely suffering, origin, cessation, and path. The householder Anāthapiṇḍada saw the Dharma, attained the Dharma, reached the profound meaning of the Dharma, transcended doubt, transcended hesitation, did not rely on others, was not led by others, and having gained fearlessness towards the Dharma taught by the Teacher, arose from his seat, draped his upper garment over one shoulder, and with his palms joined together towards where the Blessed One was, said to the Blessed One: Venerable, I have realized, I have manifestly realized. I go for refuge to the Blessed One, the Dharma, and the Sangha of monks, please accept me as a lay follower, from now on, until the end of my life, I will offer my life and take refuge. Then, the Blessed One said to the householder Anāthapiṇḍada: Householder, what is your name? Venerable, my name is Sudatta, but I often give alms to the helpless, so people call me Anāthapiṇḍada. Householder, where do you live? Venerable, in a place called Pracin, there is a town of the Kosalans called Śrāvastī, and I live there. Blessed One, please go to Śrāvastī, Blessed One, together with the Sangha, I will for as long as I live, offer robes, food, bedding, medicine for sickness, and utensils. Householder, is there a monastery in Śrāvastī? Venerable, there is not. Householder, wherever there is a monastery, monks will come, go, and dwell there. Blessed One, please go, I will by all means for the monks in Śrāvastī

There is, going elsewhere, and thinking of going in the mind, thus building the monastery. The Blessed One did not say anything to Anathapindika, so he allowed it. Then Anathapindika thought that the Blessed One did not say anything, so he allowed it, and he bowed to the two feet of the Blessed One with his head, and left the presence of the Blessed One. After that, having done and accomplished all the things that needed to be done and accomplished in Rajagriha, he went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed to the two feet of the Blessed One with his head, and sat down on one side. After sitting down on one side, Anathapindika said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, please grant me a monk as a friend, and together with him, I will build a monastery for the Blessed One. The Blessed One thought: Which monk will be able to tame Anathapindika and his retinue, and the assembly of people living in Shravasti? Seeing that the monk Shariputra would be able to tame them, then the Blessed One said to the venerable Shariputra: Shariputra, consider Anathapindika and his retinue, and the assembly of people living in Shravasti! The venerable Shariputra did not speak, and listened to the teachings of the Blessed One. Then the venerable Shariputra bowed to the two feet of the Blessed One with his head, and left the presence of the Blessed One. The venerable Shariputra, after that night had passed, in the morning put on his robes, took his bowl and Dharma robes, and went to Rajagriha for alms, and after practicing alms in Rajagriha, having done the work of eating, he abandoned the remaining alms, and arranged it as he had done in his dwelling, and then taking his bowl and Dharma robes, he walked towards where Shravasti was. Then Anathapindika, carrying a lot of food for the road, went to Shravasti night after night, and having arrived, before he had entered Shravasti, he searched from grove to grove, from garden to garden, and from forest to forest.
