With cessation, aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, discomfort, and turmoil cease. Thus, this great mass of suffering will cease. Monks, formations are suffering. Transcendence of sorrow is peace. With the arising of causes, all suffering arises, and with the cessation of causes, suffering ceases. With the cutting off of the continuum, it does not arise, and the cessation without connection, this itself is the end of suffering. Monks, what is complete transcendence of sorrow? Whatever cessation of suffering without another, that is tranquility. That is coolness, that is disappearance. Monks, this is the place of peace. Like this, abandoning all aggregates, craving is exhausted, separated from desire, cessation, is transcendence of sorrow. Then, the Blessed One again spoke twice to the Magadha king, the craftsman-skilled embodiment of the heart: Great king, what do you think? Is form permanent or impermanent? Venerable, it is impermanent. Whatever is impermanent, is that suffering? It is not suffering. Venerable, it is suffering. Whatever is impermanent, is suffering, is subject to change, would a learned disciple who has heard this consider this to be me? Would I consider this to be me? Would this be considered my self? Venerable, no. Great king, what do you think? Are feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness permanent or impermanent? Venerable, it is impermanent. Whatever is impermanent, is that suffering? It is not suffering. Venerable, it is suffering. Whatever is impermanent, is suffering, is subject to change, would a learned disciple who has heard this consider this to be me? Would I consider this to be me? Would this be considered my self? Venerable, no. Great king, what do you think? Are feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness permanent or impermanent?

For any being, if someone thinks, "This noble disciple who possesses is me, I am this, this is mine," would they cling to self in this way? Venerable, no. Great King, therefore, whatever form there is, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, coarse or subtle, inferior or superior, far or near, all of it should be observed with true wisdom as it is, knowing that all of this is not me, I am not this, this is not mine. Great King, a noble disciple who possesses hearing, seeing in this way, will become disenchanted with form. They will also become disenchanted with feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness. Being disenchanted, they will be detached from desire. Being detached from desire, they will be liberated. Being liberated, they will see the wisdom of liberation, knowing that my birth is exhausted, the holy life has been lived, what needed to be done has been done, and there will be no further existence. When this discourse was being spoken, King Bimbisara of Magadha, along with eighty thousand deities, brahmins of Magadha, and countless householders, gave rise to the stainless, immaculate vision of the Dharma in all things. Then, King Bimbisara of Magadha, having seen the Dharma, attained the Dharma, understood the Dharma, entered the Dharma, transcended doubt, transcended uncertainty, not relying on others, not being led by others, and having attained fearlessness in the Dharmas taught by the Teacher, rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, and, extending his joined palms towards where the Blessed One was, said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable, I have gone for refuge, truly gone for refuge. Venerable, I go for refuge to the Blessed One, the Dharma, and the Sangha of monks. May the Blessed One accept me as a lay follower. From this day forth, for as long as I live, I will truly go for refuge, even at the cost of my life. Blessed One, I go for refuge to the Blessed One, the Dharma, and the Sangha of monks."
