He was greatly pleased. The first Dharma talk of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, was like this: speaking of generosity, speaking of ethics, speaking of heaven, and of the faults and disadvantages of desires, of defilement and purification, of renunciation and praise of solitude, and extensively explaining the dharmas of the aspects of purification. When the Blessed One saw that they had a joyful mind, a virtuous mind, a satisfied mind, a mind free from obscurations, possessed of good fortune, and were able to understand the excellent Dharma, then the excellent Dharma taught by the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, was the Four Noble Truths, that is, extensively explaining suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the path. For example, if a clean and spotless cloth is placed in a dye that is suitable for dyeing, it can be well dyed. Similarly, as the group of sixty good ones sat on that seat, they realized the Four Noble Truths: suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the path. Then, the group of sixty good ones saw the Dharma, attained the Dharma, knew the Dharma, reached the depths of the Dharma, transcended doubt, transcended uncertainty, did not rely on others, were not led by others, and having gained fearlessness in the dharmas taught by the Teacher, they rose from their seats, draped their upper garments over one shoulder, and with their palms joined together, bowed to where the Blessed One was, and said to the Blessed One: Venerable One, we have attained. We have manifestly attained. We go for refuge to the Blessed One, the Dharma, and the Sangha of monks. We beseech the Blessed One to accept us as lay practitioners. From this day forward, for as long as we live, even at the cost of our lives, we are manifestly faithful in taking refuge. Then, the group of sixty good ones rejoiced in the words spoken by the Blessed One, and after rejoicing, they bowed their heads to the two feet of the Blessed One, and departed from the presence of the Blessed One. At that time, the Brahmin of the Sage Grove…

A wealthy man named Lha, with abundant possessions and great enjoyment, who had been very pleasing to the Blessed One in the past, at another time, his relatives were exhausted, his wealth was exhausted, and his resources were exhausted. At the time when the Blessed One, having vanquished thirty-six kotis of the retinue of demons, attained unsurpassed wisdom, the Brahmin Lha came with his wife to the city of Sde-can. Having heard that the Blessed One had attained unsurpassed wisdom, the Brahmin Lha said to his wife, "Noble woman, the Blessed One has attained unsurpassed wisdom, and the Blessed One, born into the lineage of a universal monarch, has gone to Sde-can city for alms. We should offer alms to the Blessed One, but because there is not even a day's food in my house, I have had you bled and borrowed five Karshapanas." She said, "Prince, do so." The Brahmin Lha had his wife bled by a Brahmin and borrowed five Karshapanas as a loan in order to offer food to the Blessed One. His wife said, "Prince, the Bodhisattva has never seen me wearing dirty clothes." The Brahmin Lha borrowed ornaments from a householder and adorned his wife. Then, the Brahmin Lha, together with his wife, prepared clean and blessed food and drink, and went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, if you would allow me to stay under your umbrella for a while, please grant it." The Blessed One did not say anything to the Brahmin Lha, thus granting it. Then, the Blessed One went to where the Brahmin Lha's dwelling was, and having arrived, sat down on the seat that had been prepared. Then, the Brahmin Lha, knowing that the Blessed One was seated comfortably, together with his wife, forcibly fed the Blessed One clean and blessed food and drink from their own hands, making him full. In various ways, they placed clean and blessed food and drink in their own vessels, making him full. When the Blessed One had finished eating, he put away his bowl, and knowing that the bowl was clean, he took a very low cushion and gazed at the eyes of the Blessed One.
