Thus spoke the Lord to the son of the chief of the lineage, Grakpa: 'Young man, come here, this place is harmless to you, this place is unharmed.' Then, the son of the chief of the lineage, Grakpa, took off his pair of precious shoes worth a hundred thousand at the bank of the harmful river, crossed the harmful river, went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and sat down on one side. Then, the Blessed One led the son of the chief of the lineage, Grakpa, to where his monastery was, went there alone, and sat down on the prepared seat. After sitting down, the Blessed One taught the son of the chief of the lineage, Grakpa, with words in accordance with the Dharma, made him understand correctly, praised him correctly, and made him rejoice greatly. The Dharma that the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, spoke of at the beginning is like this: the talk of generosity, the talk of morality, the talk of heaven, and the smallness of desire and its faults, and all defilements, and purification, and liberation, and the praise of solitude, and extensively explained the Dharma of the aspects of purification. When the Blessed One taught with a joyful mind, with a virtuous mind, with a satisfied mind, with a mind free from obscurations, with good fortune, and with excellent Dharma, at the time when he could know and see, the true Dharma taught by the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, is like this: the Four Noble Truths, suffering, origin, cessation, and the path, were extensively explained. Just as a clean and spotless cloth, when put into a suitable dye, can be well dyed, so too, the son of the chief of the lineage, Grakpa, while sitting on that seat, realized the Four Noble Truths, namely, suffering, origin, cessation, and the path. Then, the son of the chief of the lineage, Grakpa, saw the Dharma, attained the Dharma, knew the Dharma, reached the depths of the Dharma, transcended doubt, transcended hesitation, and did not depend on others.

to abandon and not be led by others, and having obtained fearlessness towards the Dharmas taught by the Teacher, he rose from his seat, draped his upper garment over one shoulder, and with joined palms bowed towards where the Blessed One was. He said to the Blessed One, 'Venerable One, I am noble, I am manifestly noble. I go for refuge to the Blessed One, the Dharma, and the Sangha of monks. Please accept me as a lay follower. From this day forth, as long as I live, even at the cost of my life, I will have manifest faith in going for refuge.' Vinaya-vastu, Volume Eighty-seven. A female servant, waking up from sleep that night, saw that the young Grakpa was not visible on the large bed. Having seen this, she went to where the head of the household was and said to the head of the household, 'Master, please be aware that the young Grakpa is not on his own large bed.' Then the head of the household thought, 'Has the young man been taken outside by robbers or deceitful people for the sake of wealth?' He sent mounted messengers in four directions. He himself, together with people holding lamps in their hands, went to the dangerous river. At the bank of the dangerous river, the head of the household saw a pair of precious shoes worth a hundred thousand being taken off. Having seen this, he thought, 'The young man has not been taken outside by robbers or deceitful people for the sake of wealth, but having taken off this pair of precious shoes worth a hundred thousand at the bank of the dangerous river, has the young man perhaps crossed from this bank of the dangerous river?' He thought, 'Thus, the pair of precious shoes worth a hundred thousand are here at the bank of the dangerous river.' Then, he crossed from that bank of the dangerous river and went to where the Blessed One was. The Blessed One saw the head of the household from afar. Having seen him, he thought, 'How should I manifest magical powers?'

Thinking, 'I should make this youth, known as Grakpa, sit on this cushion but not be seen.' Then, in what way did the Blessed One manifest miraculous abilities? Just as he manifested miraculous abilities, he made it so that the head of the householder's family could not see the youth Grakpa sitting on that cushion. Then, the head of the householder's family went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he said to the Blessed One, 'Blessed One, do you see the youth Grakpa?' 'Householder, sit down for that reason! There is such a place that if you sit on this cushion alone, you will be able to see the youth Grakpa.' Then, the head of the householder's family thought, 'Without a doubt, the Blessed One will be able to see the youth Grakpa.' In this way, the Blessed One said, 'Householder, sit down for that reason! There is such a place that if you sit on this cushion alone, you will be able to see the youth Grakpa.' Having understood this, he felt joy, delight, great joy, immense joy, and mental ease, and he bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, he thoroughly instructed the head of the householder's family with talk that was in accordance with the Dharma, caused him to thoroughly grasp it, thoroughly praised him, and thoroughly delighted him. The talk of Dharma that the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, spoke of in the beginning was like this: talk of generosity, talk of ethics, talk of higher realms, and praise of the smallness of desires and their faults, all afflictions, purification, renunciation, and complete solitude, and he extensively explained the Dharma of the aspects of purification. When the Blessed One saw that he had a joyful mind, a virtuous mind, a delighted mind, a mind free from obscurations, a mind endowed with merit, and that he was able to understand the excellent Dharma, then the excellent Dharma that the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, spoke of was like this: the four noble truths, namely suffering, the arising of suffering, the cessation of suffering
