Because of being extremely beautiful and possessing colors, the best of men will now become the supreme Buddha. Intermediate verse: Sound and sight and Buddha and, Perfection and feet and Dharma robes and, Support and grass and meat likewise wind, What belongs to you and these ten. Then, the Bodhisattva, the Naga King Season, having praised correctly, went to the side of the Vajra Seat. He thought: I should sit on a grass mat. Therefore, when there was a need for grass, the lord of the gods, Indra, knowing the Bodhisattva's intention, took a bundle of grass from the fragrance of sandalwood, which was as comfortable to the touch as cotton, and manifested himself as the auspicious grass seller, standing before the Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva said: Good-looking grass seller, please offer the grass to me. The lord of the gods, Indra, touched the Bodhisattva's feet with his head and offered it respectfully. Thereafter, the Bodhisattva took the grass from the auspicious grass seller, and from the path shown by the gods, went to the core of the Bodhi tree, and began to lay the grass, making it not scattered and evenly distributed. Afterwards, those grasses fell in a circular manner, and the Bodhisattva thought: Since these grasses have fallen in a circular manner, I will surely attain unsurpassed wisdom today without difficulty. After thinking this, he ascended the Vajra Seat, and sat in the lotus position as if a king walking on his chest was falling asleep, keeping his body straight, placing mindfulness in the present, and abiding there, generating Bodhicitta and saying in words: Until I have attained the exhaustion of all defilements, I will never undo the lotus position. Thus, until he had attained the exhaustion of all defilements, he did not undo the lotus position. The two banners of the evil Mara, one being the place of joy and the other being the place of doubt, from which he began to shake the banner of the place of doubt. Mara thought: This banner is shaking, it will surely cause harm without difficulty. While thinking this and entering into contemplation, he saw the Bodhisattva sitting on the Vajra Seat.

He thought to himself: This son of the Shakya clan, the son of Suddhodana, is sitting on the Vajra Seat. Before I leave my realm, I must create obstacles for him. Thinking this, he sent a messenger. He manifested as someone with upright hair, wearing a lower garment the color of a butcher's skirt. He went to where the Bodhisattva was and said urgently: Devadatta has destroyed the foundation of Kapilavastu, the palace has been destroyed, the Shakyas are beggars, why are you staying here? Then, three sinful and unwholesome thoughts arose in the Bodhisattva: the thought of desire, the thought of hatred, and the thought of harm. Among them, the thought of desire arose towards the singing woman, the hunter, and the earth digger; the thought of hatred arose towards Devadatta; the thought of harm arose towards those Shakyas who followed him (Devadatta). The Bodhisattva thought: Why did I have these three sinful and unwholesome thoughts? He saw that the evil demon was approaching to cause disturbance. Then, three virtuous thoughts arose in the Bodhisattva: the thought of renunciation, the thought of non-hatred, and the thought of non-harm. The demon said again: Why are you sitting under the Bodhi tree? The Bodhisattva replied: To attain unsurpassed wisdom. The demon said: If you can attain unsurpassed wisdom. The Bodhisattva replied: Evil one, even if you make just one offering, you can become the complete and independent lord of the desire realm. I have made countless billions of offerings for countless eons, and for the sake of sentient beings, I have given away my head, hands, feet, eyes, flesh, blood, children, wife, wealth, gold, and everything else. How much more will I certainly attain unsurpassed wisdom? As long as I have not attained unsurpassed wisdom, I will not leave.

Then, after saying that, the demon said: For now, how is it that I obtained dominion over the desire realm through a single offering of mine, and you are my witness? How is it that for the sake of your obtaining unsurpassed wisdom, you have made countless billions of hundreds of thousands of millions of offerings in three countless eons? And for the sake of sentient beings, you have completely given away your head, hands, feet, eyes, flesh, blood, sons, wives, wealth, gold, and so forth. Who is there to be your witness? Then, the Bodhisattva, the Bhagavan, touched the earth with his hand, which was marked with a wheel, auspicious signs, a swastika, and a net, and which was produced by hundreds of thousands of merits, and which gave breath to those who were afraid, and said: I have made countless billions of hundreds of thousands of millions of offerings in three countless eons, and for the sake of sentient beings, I have completely given away my head, hands, feet, eyes, flesh, blood, sons, wives, wealth, gold, and so forth. This earth is my witness. Then, the earth goddess broke through the earth, joined her palms, and cried out: What the sinful Bhagavan has said is true. After saying this, the sinful demon became speechless, became dejected, became shrinking, lowered his head, had no pride, and sat there regretting in his heart. He thought painfully and unhappily: I have done this to Shakya, the son of Suddhodana, but I have not found an opportunity. So, I will create another obstacle for this one. After saying this, he left. Then, he sent his three daughters, Craving Mother, Delightful Mother, and Joyful Conduct Mother, who were arrogant with beauty and youthful vigor, and adorned with divine clothes and ornaments. They began to display the wiles of women in front of the Bodhisattva. Then, the Bodhisattva, skilled in means, blessed them to become like old women. They went to where the demon was, and when the demon saw them in that form, he was disappointed and rested his chin on his hand, thinking about what method he could use to create obstacles for the asceticism of Shakya, the son of Suddhodana.
