He said. Then the Bodhisattva traveled twelve pakchhedas of two yojanas, descended from his mount, removed his ornaments, and spoke to Chandaka: "Chandaka, take the ornaments and the horse and return!" Here he said: "O charioteer, you give this horse of mine, and all these ornaments to my relatives. I have abandoned great desires, and now I will renounce here." Then Chandaka, with tears falling like rain on his face, pleaded with the Bodhisattva: "Where lions and tigers give birth, in the forest trampled by wild beasts, alone and separated from your relatives, how will you, O noble one, practice?" The Bodhisattva said: "Beings are born alone, and likewise they die alone. They alone experience suffering, and there are no friends in samsara." Chandaka pleaded: "Alas, young one, you have not seen suffering, your soft feet are accustomed to riding elephants and horses, how will you walk with your feet on the rough ground covered with grass and stones, and roam in the forest?" The Bodhisattva said: "The fear of death never, considers pleasure and comfort, or those who are accustomed to them. It does not consider those with protectors, or those of noble birth, or the brave and diligent, or those who are joyful. It is said that the fear of death, born of joy, will come after. Without having done anything, without having strived, one will also go to death." Chandaka pleaded: "The aged king of the gods will die of grief for his son!" However, the Bodhisattva, in order to accumulate the accumulations of enlightenment, took Chandaka's words to heart. Then the Bodhisattva drew from its sheath a sword like a blue lotus, cut off his topknot, and threw it into the sky above, and Indra, the lord of the gods, caught it and, honoring it greatly, took it into the midst of the thirty-three gods, and established a great offering of the topknot. Brahmins and faithful householders built a stupa where the hair was cut, and even now monks who worship the stupa still worship it. Vinaya-vastu, Volume Eighty-Four. The Bodhisattva said: "Chandaka, what do you think? What

La. How could anyone stay at home with such behavior? Oh gods! The Acharya thought: This young man is of royal descent and arrogant, so he cannot be persuaded to return. Then, the horse king Good Name licked the Bodhisattva's feet with his tongue, and smeared them with the wheel, auspicious signs, and swastika on the Bodhisattva's hands, and said: Good Name, go, and when you attain perfect enlightenment, I will repay your kindness. He also said to the Acharya: Do not take Good Name back to the palace. After saying these words, the Acharya choked up, his eyes filled with tears, and led the horse king Good Name away, looking at the Bodhisattva again and again. The two of them set out from the land sown with two *yojana* (ancient unit of distance), and returned after seven days. The Acharya thought: If I go back together, I will be frightened to death by the great wailing, so he sat in the garden and released Good Name. Good Name neighed, and the people of the palace and others also heard the sound, and ran out hopefully, but did not see the Bodhisattva, so they gathered around Good Name's neck and began to cry. This is the law of nature, even ordinary beings who are born as animals have worldly knowledge, let alone the horse king Good Name? He heard the great wailing of the crowd, and died of suffocation, and was reborn as a Brahmin of a lineage who was proficient in the six Vedas. When the Bodhisattva attains unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, he will be given the teachings of subduing Mara, liberated from the wilderness of samsara, and ultimately attain perfect accomplishment and the bliss of Nirvana. The Bodhisattva needed robes, so he went to the city of Incomparable, where there lived a wealthy householder, who was rich, enjoyed abundance, had vast possessions, possessed the wealth of Vaishravana, and could even rival Vaishravana in wealth. He took a wife from the same caste.

Having taken them, he would play with him, rejoice, and enjoy himself. As he played, rejoiced, and enjoyed himself, from "a boy was born" to "in this way, ten boys were born." All of them renounced and directly realized the enlightenment of a Pratyekabuddha. Their old mother gave each of them a Shana garment, and they said, "Mother, we are about to pass into complete nirvana, so we do not need these. However, there is a young son of King Suddhodana named Shakyamuni who will awaken to unsurpassed and perfect complete enlightenment. Offer these to him. By doing so, you will obtain great fruit." Having said this, they performed miracles of blazing, appearing, raining, and emitting lightning, and then completely passed into nirvana in the realm of nirvana without remainder. The old woman, at the time of her death, entrusted those garments to her daughter and told her what had happened. Her daughter, also afflicted by illness and knowing that she was about to die, placed the garments under a tree and prayed to the deity dwelling in that tree, saying, "Please offer these to the son of King Suddhodana." Indra, the lord of the gods, whose knowledge penetrates everything, knew this and took the garments. Then, he manifested himself as an old hunter, divided the garments, and sat on the path where the Bodhisattva was going, holding a bow and arrow in his hand. The Bodhisattva also gradually came to that path and saw a hunter holding a bow and arrow and wearing reddish-brown garments. Having seen him, he said to the man, "Hey, sir, Shana garments are suitable for renunciates. Take these Kashi silk cloths and give me the Shana garments." He replied, "Young man, others will say that you killed the young prince and took these Kashi silk clothes, so I will not give these to you." The Bodhisattva said, "Hey, sir, how great is my power, the whole world knows.
