Those which are not beneficial to many people, harmful to many people, painful to many people, not beneficial to gods and humans, harmful, and cause suffering, monks, if you truly see that the root of such disputes, whether internal or external, has not been abandoned, then you should be united and harmonious, universally joyful, without disputes, with strong intention, diligence, effort, joy, firmness, irreversible mindfulness, and awareness, strive until the root of the dispute is abandoned. In this way, you will be able to abandon the root of the dispute. Monks, if you truly see that the root of such disputes, whether internal or external, has been well abandoned, then you should be united and harmonious, universally joyful, without disputes, with strong intention, diligence, effort, joy, firmness, irreversible mindfulness, and awareness, strive in every way to ensure that the root of the dispute that has been abandoned does not arise again in the future. In this way, you will be able to completely eliminate the root of the dispute, and it will not arise again in the future. These are called the six roots of dispute. What are the fourteen bases for dispute? They are: This is Dharma, or this is not Dharma; this is Vinaya, or this is not Vinaya; this is an offense, or this is not an offense; is it a serious offense, or a light offense; is it remaining, or not remaining; is it to be confessed, or to be restrained; does it belong to a wrong explanation, or does it belong to a correct explanation. These are called the fourteen bases for dispute. Monks, the dispute of contention is its root, and the root of the dispute of contention is it. Monks, what is the root of the dispute without instruction, and what is the root of the dispute without instruction? Because the Sangha does not accept instruction, does not give instruction, and puts aside instruction, there will be fighting, mutual exposure of shortcomings, quarrels, and disputes. Monks, without instruction

Argument is its root, and the root of argument without instruction is it. Monks, what is the root of the argument of downfall, and what is the root of the argument of downfall? There are five categories of downfall, called the category of downfall and the aggregate of downfall. What are the five? Parajika, Sanghavasesa, Pacittiya, Patidesaniya, and Dukkata. Furthermore, there is the downfall of the body, which is not of speech or mind. There is the downfall of speech, which is not of body or mind. There is the downfall of body and mind, which is not of speech. And there is the downfall of body, speech, and mind. What is the downfall of the body, which is not of speech or mind? For example, a monk thinks that a householder or one who has not taken full ordination has not come out, or that a householder or one who has not taken full ordination has come out, and lies down. When he falls asleep, a woman lies down, or after falling asleep, he is placed on a large bed. This is the downfall of the body, not of speech or mind. What is the downfall of speech, which is not of body or mind? For example, a monk preaches five words of Dharma to a woman, unintentionally exceeding six words, or when preaching six words, exceeding seven words. This is the downfall of speech, not of body or mind. What is the downfall of body and mind, which is not of speech? For example, a monk intentionally intends to kill a living being that has entered the animal realm, and then says, "Just as I killed it, so should living beings be separated from life. Killing like this is killing well." Taking what is not given, engaging in sexual misconduct out of desire, drinking intoxicants, and then saying, "Just as I drank, so should intoxicants be drunk. Drinking like this is drinking well." Not saying this. This is the downfall of body and mind, not of speech. What is the downfall of body, speech, and mind?

Just as I kill, so should living beings be separated from life. Killing in this way is good killing, thus speaking, and taking what is not given. And sexual misconduct, drinking intoxicating liquor, thus speaking, just as I drink, so should intoxicating things be drunk. Drinking intoxicating things in this way is good drinking. This is the downfall of body, speech, and mind. Monks, the dispute of downfall has this as its root, and the root of the dispute of downfall is this. Monks, what is the root of the dispute of action, and what is the root of the dispute of action? Whatever is the action of the Sangha, whether it is a request, a request and two, or a karma of request and four, monks, the dispute of action has this as its root, and the root of the dispute of action is this. Monks, the dispute of contention should be called good, should be called non-good, and should be called unstated. What is good? The Sangha accomplishes benefit and contemplates benefit, accomplishes the benefit of good and contemplates good, and speaks various words based on this, contradictory words, words of different kinds, and whatever fighting, exposing faults, arguing, and contending arise from this, these are good. What is non-good? The Sangha does not accomplish benefit and does not contemplate benefit, does not accomplish the benefit of good and does not contemplate good, and speaks various words based on this, contradictory words, words of different kinds, and whatever fighting, exposing faults, arguing, and contending arise from this, these are non-good. What is unstated? The Sangha neither accomplishes benefit nor accomplishes non-benefit, neither contemplates benefit nor contemplates non-benefit, neither accomplishes the benefit of good nor accomplishes the benefit of non-good, neither contemplates good nor contemplates non-good, and speaks various words based on this, contradictory words, words of different kinds, and whatever fighting, exposing faults, arguing, and contending arise from this, these are unstated.
