Explanation of the Basis of Disputes. Explanation of the Basis of Disputes. A summary of the basis for pacifying disputes: disputes of fighting and debating; what is the root and what is the benefit; it is debating and not disputing; the time of debating is the time of pacification; debating is manifestly pacified; by accepting the rules; the absence of instruction is manifest; mindfulness and non-intoxication, suitable for taming; seeking and questioning its nature; suitable like spreading grass; the Sangha is in harmony; disputes of such actions, should be pacified nearby, as the great sage has well spoken. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in the Nyagrodha Garden in the land of the Shakyas. Whenever the Bhagavan established the Shakyas in the truth, they would go three times to behold the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan also repeatedly taught them the Dharma. The practice of King Suddhodana was to be surrounded by the Shakya assembly and go three times to behold the Bhagavan. At another time, the Bhagavan was sitting among hundreds of thousands of retinues, teaching the Dharma like pure honey, and hundreds of thousands of retinues, with their senses still, listened to the sweet Dharma from the Bhagavan. King Suddhodana also, in order to listen to the Dharma, with the great wealth of a king and the great power of a king, surrounded by the Shakya assembly, went before the Bhagavan. He listened to the Dharma and departed. Then, Shakya Mingchen listened to the Dharma from before the Bhagavan, generated faith, and returned to his own home, saying: "O Buddha! O Dharma! O Sangha! The appearance of the Buddha is fruitful for me!" Mingchen's virtuous wife said: "Lord's son, what is that?" He said: "Today the Bhagavan has taught such a Dharma in front of hundreds of thousands of retinues, and having heard it, hundreds of thousands of beings have realized great differences." She said: "Lord's son, what you said, 'The appearance of the Buddha is fruitful for me,' is not so. The appearance of the Buddha is only fruitful for you."
